We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Roberta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I never decided to start my own business. For me, it was just something that had to happen. My journey to becoming an entrepreneur in the spiritual and wellness space is documented in my book, Living In Tune, because I gradually realised over time that I was massively living “out of tune” in my corporate life and had to make a big change. I had tried society’s way and it didn’t work at all for me. I felt like I didn’t fit in and pretty much like my soul was being squeezed out of me every day! However, I looked around and everyone else around me seemed to be getting on OK with it. I knew I was different, and eventually, I realised that I was meant to be an entrepreneur. I would never do anything else – I don’t feel like I have a choice!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
2022 has been a big year for me. My book came out on 11th January and that’s set the tone for everything since. Revealing it to the world a month before felt like a dream come true, because it was over 3 years of work that had gone into it – writing and pitching proposals, and then changing the idea when it got rejected. Then, after I got my book deal, it was writing and rewriting the manuscript, until it was finally finished with the editing team.
I manifested working with the publisher I had my heart set on and signed a deal with them in 2020. Hay House are the world’s biggest publisher of self-help books, so I felt really supported through the process and have become part of an amazing community of successful authors and businesspeople in the spiritual, wellness and personal development worlds.
Since the book has come out, I’ve been getting messages from people saying how it’s changed their lives: moving locations, changing careers, launching businesses and waking up to the full power of their energy and intuition. After spending years creating a framework and testing it with coaching clients, writing 84 journalling prompts, and creating the whole package of the book (the words, the cover design, the concept, and the flow of how it all fits together), I feel like my goal of impacting others is finally being realised in a big way.
I now have a program for aspiring authors who want to start their book journey and my one piece of advice would be to follow your intuition and keep going. I KNEW I had to be with Hay House and no one else, and I KNEW what my book was meant to be about. Even when you get rejection after rejection, you have to stick to those knowings – otherwise, your work won’t be as powerful.
Trust that the no’s are a way of the universe lining you up for the best possible timing and opportunity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Cafe Gratitude, an amazing vegan restaurant where everything is named with an affirmation (for example, a regular coffee is called “I am courageous”). The Larchmont branch is my favourite because it’s just off Melrose Ave, so you can walk along there afterwards and explore all of the quirky independent fashion stores. Hiking is also a key LA activity, so I would go to either Runyon Canyon or Griffith Park and walk all the way up because the views over the city are absolutely insane. When you’re at the top, you feel like anything is possible. Another one of my favourite food spots is Urth Caffe – loads of healthy and super delicious options; get there early though because there’s always a massive queue!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to shoutout my husband, who is my number 1 person. I dedicated my book to him too and didn’t tell him beforehand so it was a surprise when he got a printed copy once it had been published. I would also have to shoutout all of the brave souls in the world who have gone first and done something different, regardless of how scary it was or how much backlash they got for doing it. Some of my favourites are Lady Gaga, Gloria Allred, Eminem and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
