Meet Erin Male | Display artist & Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Male and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from the east coast, born in Jersey and raised in New Hope Pennsylvania. A gorgeous, wealthy suburb similar to where my dad grew up. My mom immigrated from a rougher town outside Dublin Ireland when she was 33. My family, consisting of 2 parents and 3 daughters, would often visit in the summer. So growing up there were a lot of opposites coexisting and loads of fierce feminine energy.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the thing that sets me apart most is my ability to work with any medium at any scale. From metalsmithing tiny ring treehouses to 40 ft murals I’m down to design and execute anything. The most challenging part of any project is the meticulous planning beforehand and the spontaneity an install often demands. Overcoming these challenges comes with stubborn persistence and a gut instinct for design.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Most of my family/friends are from the east coast so usually want to do some staple LA things like hike the Hollywood sign or Griffith Park. Beaches in Malibu, the Getty, and comedy shows in West Hollywood are always a good time. Otherwise just eat loads and look around each neighborhood. Sushi Gen in Little Tokyo ($$$), Little Doms in Los Feliz ($$), Los California Tacos, a food truck in Pasadena ($) are all outrageously good.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My dad, Jonathan Male, has always been the most enthusiastic supporter of any artistic scribble I’d produce. His genuine joy made art my passion and biggest source of pride.
One of my roommates in college Andy Gottschalk, an incredible artist, also deserves a shoutout. I remember working with him one day and the whole time he was cracking himself up just rearranging paper shapes. This was an important lesson because up until then I thought the only meaningful art I made needed to come from a place of turmoil. But his way is more fun.
