We had the good fortune of connecting with Baptista Kawa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Baptista, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Working hard, Never give up and always hoping for the best.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Practicing teaching and performing keep busy professionally.
I remember at age of 13 I would sneak into my classroom after school and practice dance moves that I saw in movies. My unique mix of power moves, flip combinations and traditional Congolese Ndombolo set me apart.
I’m so proud of what I’ve became and grow as an artist dancer when I started I didn’t know that one day I would travel the world as a dancer. It was really hard for me because my family didn’t want me to be a dancer cuz they thought it wasn’t right for me that is one of the reasons why I used to sneak in my classroom after class and practice dance moves I saw in movies then I would lie at home that I stayed at school studying.
I grew up in a difficult life. I was raised by my grandmother after my parent divorced. I’m so excited to see what’s coming in the future a one step of success in my career I always consider it as a beginning.
To get where I am today was not easy at all. It took me lots of time and patience
also being patient is the key to where I am now.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I remember in 2012 there was one of the best Urban and contemporary dance group in DRC called Street Dancers Company they used to perform in the Street of Goma Congo.
One morning I stopped by to watch and then at the end of the show they asked everyone in the audience who’s a dancer or a Breaker to get in the circle and dance. I didn’t hesitate to jumped in the circle and show off some skills. we were so many people who jumped in the circle but at the end They liked me and thought I was a talented kid, So they recruited me to join the group and that’s how I started my professional career as a dancer. So what I can say is that I’m grateful for the contribution of the Street Dancers Company in my dance career.
