We had the good fortune of connecting with Markus Siegel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Markus, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks is essential to success in my opinion. Stepping outside of your comfort zone and doing things that make you uncomfortable from a career stand point, will push you to the next level and help you get to where you want to be. Having said that, they have to be calculated risks where you can see a path to success rather than blindly jumping into the unknown, completely unprepared.

For me moving to the US and doing a masters in Music for Film and TV was a massive risk but I knew that my end goal would be moving to Los Angeles and this course gave me the opportunity and contacts to make this career a reality. Two years on and I’m in a position I could only dream of not long ago, living in Los Angeles and working with people I always admired.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a musician working in the film and television industry. I specialize in writing orchestral music and I’m particularly inspired by the music from adventure movies such as Harry Potter, E.T, How to Train Your Dragon etc. There is something magical about those score that sparks my imagination and gets me excited about writing music.

I have only just started my career but to even get to this point a lot of stress, hard work, time and money has gone into it. I first moved from Romania where I was born, to England where I lived for 10 years, then my journey took me to Chicago and now I have finally landed in LA. I’m incredibly excited to be involved in some studio productions and grow my career alongside some incredibly talented people.

I think the most important lessons I have learned are that not giving up and taking risks are two things that you just have to get used to if you are to get anywhere in this industry. You will feel incredibly uncomfortable along the way as you’re learning new things, meeting new people and being pushed to your limits, but unfortunately this is the only way to do it. Be open minded and take all these challenges in your stride. If you keep going even when you want to quit and you surround yourself with supportive people, eventually you will reap the rewards of your hard work.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have not been here long but LA has a lot of outdoor activities to offer. Hiking up to the Griffiths observatory is always fun, relaxing by the beach in Santa Monica or visiting the Universal Studios are all great activities to do while in LA.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would be nowhere near the position I am in now without the support of my girlfriend, my parents and my brother. Whether that’s through emotional or financial support, I was able to lean on them and they always pushed me on whenever I felt like I could not go any further.
