We had the good fortune of connecting with Chevy Knight and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chevy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Wanting to start my own business was something that was always in the back of my mind. I’ve had many different jobs in many different fields and I was always put in the manager role without actually being a manager. A ‘natural leader’ I’ve been called. I found it hard to feel good about my work when I felt my superiors didn’t share the same vision. When I started cutting hair I wanted to offer more to my clients than just a quick cut. I wanted to create an experience for them to escape their stressful day and take a moment for themselves. I thought about what I would want in a salon scenario and I feel I’ve executed that.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There is a hair salon or barbershop on every corner in almost every city. Not every spot is going to be for everyone. I am proud to say that I offer a fun, calm, private environment where my clients, new and returning, can relax and leave feeling refreshed and fancy! Making the decision to leave an hourly paying salon to start my own business was the scariest and best decision I ever made. There have been ups and downs, like many small businesses face when starting out, but when you are doing what you love and doing it for you, at the end of the day it’s all worth it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to all my usual places! We would go grab some coffee at The Coffee Roaster, where I manage and operate the shop itself and enjoy some delicious cinnamon rolls made by All About the Cinnamon. As well as dip a delicious cookie by Hot Jamns Preserves into our freshly roasted coffee. For a little lunch date I’d take them down the street to Rumi Cafe. For some light shopping we would walk on over to Freak Beat Records to dig through some vinyl and CD’s. Maybe catch some live music at The Last Call, where every Monday I sing with a ton of other talented musicians for The Last Call Jam. If the mood takes us, we could go catch a movie at The New Beverly which has a great selection of showings, all on film! For another eating adventure we would go grab some amazing vegan food at HOPE Kitchen. And to top it all off, I’d take them to my favorite chocolate shop, Maya’s Brigadeiro to enjoy some delicious Brazilian treats!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a huge shoutout to all the people I have come across during my journey to where I am now. Those of you who supported me through this hard, confusing journey. I also want to recognize all the people who thought I couldn’t achieve my goals and tried to tear me down. You truly are to thank. You helped me persevere and fight harder for what I wanted, just to show myself that I am capable of accomplishing my goals. For anyone who has any doubts about what they want to do or be in their life, don’t let anyone tell you ‘you won’t make it’. You will make it! In your own way, you will make it! Thank you to the lovers and the haters.
