We had the good fortune of connecting with Phoenix Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phoenix, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a creative career because it was something I truly had a passion for. I picked up a camera for the first time my freshman year of high school. By the time I graduated I had been hired to do video work in places like Greece, Alaska, and throughout the states. I didn’t make much money but it was real proof that maybe I could do this for a living. I made decent grades but disliked school with a passion. I had zero interest in having a traditional job. So I decided to take a leap of faith and move from my small town in Central Texas and move to Orange County. At the time there was no thought of a career or a business just a desire to make videos for a living.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I grew up in Belton, TX. A small town north of Austin where there wasn’t much to do. My first passions were Crossfit and Olympic Weightlifting. I was fortunate to travel around and compete in both sports on a national level. This allowed my to get an itch for traveling and meet many different people from all walks of life outside my small town.
My freshman year of high school I joined the Audio Visual class. From here I was able to combine my new found passion for creating videos with my first love of fitness. With supportive brands and mentors that I met through the fitness space. This allowed for me to travel to places like Greece and Alaska for video projects all before I even graduated high school. Once I did graduate I decided to move from my small town to Orange County to pursue my goal of making videos full time.
Even though Hollywood was a stones throw away. I had zero desire to go into the traditional moviemaking business. I found myself much more attracted to lifestyle and branded content. I started to transition from solely working in the fitness space. To working in the tattoo space as well. This opened my eyes to a new way of filmmaking by allowing me to do my first documentary. I still do branded and commercial work. But my true passion now lies in documentaries and storytelling.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I may be the worst person to ask this question. I still feel I’m a visitor when it comes to LA. I don’t make it into the city all that often unless it’s for work. Typically I rely on the help of friends to guide me on places to go and eat.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that have supported me and encouraged me to be where I am today. It truly does take a village. Mentors, Friends, and people that just believed in me. I cant thank them enough for the opportunities and love they have given me.
But the biggest thank you to my Mom and Dad for believing in me and supporting me every step of the way, Also to my Wife Kira for being my biggest cheerleader and partner in life.
