We had the good fortune of connecting with Evelyn Jerome-Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evelyn, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by the incredible team of counselors who have joined my team, and the amazing relationships we build with our teenage clients, and their parents. I wake up every day knowing I have success ahead of me, and feeling grateful that I have a job that helps reduce the anxiety in a stressful process for my clients.

What should our readers know about your business?
I started Magellan College Counseling 10 years ago as a sole practitioner. I never thought it would grow to the 12-counselor practice it is today, but I’m thrilled that it has grown the way it has. What sets us apart from others is our team approach and our team effort. Before COVID-19, we worked together, but since the pandemic began, we have pulled even closer together to continue our professional development and provide up-to-date and excellent service to the students and families who trust us to be their college admission experts. We did have a bump in the road, about 2 years ago. We had a team of counselors in LA and a team in Boston. When the Boston counselors separated from us, this really coalesced our LA team. Interestingly enough, we have doubled in size since then. The short-term obstacle of having people separate from the team prepared us to welcome new team members into our family, and taught us to connect in meaningful ways.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in Los Angeles, there is so much to do, and so much going on here. There’s so much to eat as well! If the weather is nice, out of town visitors always want to see the beach. I’d take her to Malibu, maybe grab lunch at Paradise Cove Beach Cafe, where they have an AMAZING salad bar and you can sit outside with your feet in the sand! I also love love love our hiking here. I love the awesome hiking trails in Topanga, and on Mulholland Drive. It’s a great way to get fresh air, exercise and slow down a bit. Some of my other favorite food spots: I love Tatsuki in Woodland Hills, Nicola’s Kitchen has the best house salad dressing ever, and I love the Lebanese food at Sunnin in Westwood! So pretty much when my friends come to visit, we just eat, eat and eat!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My entrepreneurial spirit comes from my parents, who taught me that working for yourself is hard, hard, really hard, definitely difficult and oh yes, rewarding, super-rewarding as well.
