We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexia DelGiudice and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk taking is one of the most important factors as a musician. Having had a classical music upbringing and background, deciding to delve into the alternative rock world as well has been a definite risk. It is not a conventional path having graduated from The Juilliard School, but I feel that it has actually made me a stronger & more passionate musician classically.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have an alternative/goth music project called Wikka. I sing, play viola and write all of my own music. This sets me apart from a lot of classically trained musicians as it is not a conventional path that I have taken, especially since I still perform classically all the time and audition for orchestras like everyone else. I sometimes feel that I am living two separate lives. I am so proud of all I have accomplished these past few years. I have been able to tell many stories through my music that so many people can relate to and connect to. It has been challenging to be taken seriously by my classical peers that o went to conservatory with, but I think I have done a good job at dancing to the beat of my own drum and receiving approval from others at the same time. I went to school for viola performance at The Juilliard School and Northwestern University, and have spent my entire life studying the viola. An important lesson I have learned is that there is no one type of music that is superior. Music is a gift to this world, and should not be considered exclusive and exclusionary. My brand/story basically states that you should feel comfortable being 100% yourself; weird and unique! Be proud of what makes you different.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
NYC has so much to see and experience! If my best friend was visiting we would definitely see a few Broadway shows of course, as well as catch a performance at the Metropolitan Opera, but I’d also want to take them to some underground spots as well. I love hanging out in the East Village and thrift shopping. There are so many fun and unique independent businesses to explore. We would eat at my favorite Italian restaurant Olio e piu. The location is wonderful and the ambience is so peaceful and relaxing. After that I would definitely take them to some goth bars such as Madame X, or beetlehouse.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to David Rubinstein, a viola teacher I had that truly shaped who I was as a musician. He gave me back my confidence at a time I truly needed it.
