Meet Scotty Dunn | Filmmaker/Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Scotty Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scotty, why did you pursue a creative career?
Filmmaking is the only thing I’m good at, so I’m stuck with it, but in a good way. I’ve always made films ever since I was a little kid. I made hour-long movies with my friends using my dad’s camcorder. My dad was also a big influence in pursuing a career in film because he always took me to the movies. I look back really fondly on those times.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started out as an actor in LA. I got a sizeable role in a few episodes of a Disney show called, “Kickin’ it,” but after a few years I got major burnout from the audition circuit. After that, I decided to start making my own films with my wife and filmmaking partner Gina Dunn. We had some successes in the indie film space, like when our sci-fi comedy film, Mandao of the Dead, was selected to screen at San Diego Comic Con in 2019. That was such an amazing experience. Then, we raised over $26,000 on Kickstarter and made our sequel Mandao Returns. The Mandao Film Series is about a quirky group of friends who use astral projection to travel through time. Since then, I’ve shifted my focus to YouTube instead of pursuing the traditional filmmaker route.
YouTube is still not taken very seriously by many in the industry, but I believe it’s a big part of the future. As Hollywood continues to implode, more artists will gravitate to YouTube because there are no gatekeepers. You don’t have to ask for permission. You can just upload your art with the click of a button.
I’m the most excited I’ve ever been as a filmmaker because now I’m releasing a diverse lineup of content every week as opposed to releasing one feature film every two years. My Youtube channel has a video essays about pop culture and all my animations and original films.
Gina and I both realized it was impossible to build any momentum with so much time between making films the traditional way. One day someone is going to make a blockbuster movie using only their desktop and when that day comes, Hollywood is going to have to seriously re-evaluate how they’re doing things.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first thing we would do is go for some amazing Korean BBQ. There’s this place on 6th street in K-town called Hae Jang Chon and it’s all you can eat. My wife and I always have a great time taking friends there. We also love going to the Vista Theater on Sunset and checking out whatever they have playing there.
And then of course, if they haven’t been to the usual tourist haunts like Universal City Walk, Disneyland, or an escape room, then we’ll do all of that.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We definitely want to thank our family and friends for their continued support. Without them, we wouldn’t have the faith to dive in head first to making our films and content.
Also, special shoutout to our lovable movie cousin, Sean Liang, for referring us to Shoutout LA. He’s a great actor. Hire him. Now.
