Meet Beatriz Eugenia Vasquez | Choreographer, Dancer & Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Beatriz Eugenia Vasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beatriz Eugenia, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is actually a few things not just one, Tenacity is the first, not giving up when things got challenging, to keep going event at times when I felt lost, or doubtful. Consistency and just showing up every day, working a little bit every day and understanding that the kind of success I want is long term, not a quick and short but a long steady and stable type of success, and that takes time. It doesn’t happen over night, but as the years go by, and they go by so quick you start seeing the fruits of your labor.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
3-19 Dance Art was born out of the necessity of telling my own stories. After dancing under amazing dance directors and choreographers I felt the need to create my own worlds, to express myself 100% as creator, choreographer, director and dancer. To be a curator where my creations were designed from a visual arts point of view, where my dances were immersed with colors, textures, vibrancy, and variety. This is how I created 3-19 Dance Art (Where Magical Realism meets Dance). What sets us apart is my philosophy to bring Concert Dance to the community, specially children, to expose them to the arts at an early age, and to have children as guest artists performing alongside our seasoned dancers so they can gain experience in the field of dance. This way of thinking is what opens many doors for us, allowing us to be known and to create a strong following. What I am most proud of is how far we have come along, from just a few performances per year back in 2012 to performing almost every month in events, performances, festivals etc. The biggest lesson I have learned along the way is that there is no such a thing as a small performance, you never know where your next opportunity may come from, so don’t discriminate and share your art with everyone.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For sight seeing I would take them to Griffith Observatory, Descanso Gardens, Laguna Beach, Farmers Market on 3rd Street, the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, Placita Olvera, and China town. To eat I would take them to Thai town, Little Tokyo, Korea Town, La Guelaguetza for Mexican Food, and la Fonda Antioqueña for Colombian Food, and of course the farmers market for the French Crepe Company. In my view we have some of the best natural resources in the USA so going to the beach, to the hiking trails, or smaller cities around LA is one of the perks of living in LA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my partner Castulo Alfredo Iraheta, and my mother Beatriz Vargas for their support is always unconditional and the most genuine. Then it has to be my mentors, the people who inspire me to grow and to keep going, Chester Whitmore (One of my Dance directors and my dance dad), Katerina Tomas: Director of one of the dance companies I dance for (Mojacar Flamenco), my 3-19 dancers: Delante McCreary, Rey Santiago, Regginald Thornton, Claudia Paz, who have been part of so many performances and events which have contributed to 3-19 Dance Art’s success, and all of my students, kids and adults who bring so much joy to my life by enjoying and taking my classes week after week, even now during Covid time.
