We had the good fortune of connecting with Carrie Cox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carrie, what inspires you?
Nature and love are my greatest inspirations.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art traces the sacred and profane. As a child, my body was not my own. Adopted and raised mormon, I was sexually abused by my primary teacher for years. Raised on phrases like, “Idle hands are the devil’s playground” and “modest is hottest”, I was cloaked in shame and responsibility for others actions that were never mine to hold.

As I rise, I see a world of women breaking the shackles of body shame that they too have inherited.

The greatest power of all lives inside of you, not outside.
Women stand as living art in front of my lens.
Free from the shame of their inheritance.

We are each echoes of the great mother’s body.

The way we treat women is the way we treat the earth.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve never lived in LA, only visited. But Topanga canyon has my heart.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am who I am because of the angels who have graced my path. Thank you to my sister and friends who have truly been there for me.
You showed me love and support, even when I lost faith in myself.
