We had the good fortune of connecting with Yancyabril and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yancyabril, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking risks is where some of the most marvelous things happen in someones career especially in music. You grow professionally and as a person from doing what seemed really scary and unachievable and in a way, you show the universe how much you really want to succeed in something and by taking that risk, the universe rewards you with something great out of it; at least in my experience!

I was so fortunate to participate in The Voice Dominicana and the way it happened was by taking a leap of faith and going for it even though it scared the heck out of me. I was convinced by my aunt it would be a great idea to go to a whole other country (Dominican Republic where my family is from) from New York for a casting call. It seemed insane but I was so eager for an awesome opportunity like this that I went for it. It was a huge risk because not only am I spending money on a not so cheap flight, but I could be rejected and this could possibly be for nothing! I still auditioned and by the end of the year, I, Yancyabril who was so scared of the rejection and was building anxiety over this, made it to the Top 8 on the show. It’s a major accomplishment for me and that was all because of the risk I took for my dream of being a singer and performer.

Take a leap of faith. Trust yourself too and what you can offer and believe that you deserve it; whatever “it” is. You will be rewarded for your hard work. Always stay consistent and focused on what you want in your career.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a full time artist and I love what I do! It definitely gets hard most of the time but I love creating music and performing so much that I just don’t see anything else for me. My biggest accomplishments have been graduating college from SUNY Purchase as an Ella Fitzgerald scholar (education is super important to me and my mom), singing at Carnegie Hall when I was 17 years old, and being a Top 8 contestant on The Voice Dominicana.

There is still so much more for me to accomplish. I have a long way to go and I’m still not where I want to be in my career just yet but I will acknowledge that I have made it far and I’m very proud of myself and my resilience. I couldn’t have done it without my school mentors, professors, my family who believes in me so much and my work ethic and want for a successful music career. It definitely is not easy. Whoever is in the music industry, knows and understands that it is not a place for the weak! It’s an extremely tough business especially as a young woman. People will definitely try to take advantage of you which is why you never go anywhere alone. That goes for men and women trying to break into the industry. But its also a lot of practice in your craft and just being prepared which is what I’ve been focusing on. Preparing myself and who I want to be as an artist and just getting better everyday so that I’m ready for what’s to come.

I want the world to know me, Yancyabril, as an extremely passionate artist who works hard on her craft and wants to learn/grow everyday to get better and better. I love writing songs with my guitar that are mostly about love. I want the world to know I’m a proud Dominican – American and love everything about who I am. I also want people to know I’m a major goofball and just love to laugh, have fun, and make other people smile too. It makes me happy to see others happy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely a broadway show would be our first stop! They’re so much fun and truly a magnificent experience. I would also take them to eat at my favorite spot, Cachapas y Mas in Dyckman where I grew up. The best patacones are there! I would also just take them to walk around and have an impromptu photoshoot in Brooklyn where there’s so much cool art.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom! I know that’s so cliche but my mom has been my biggest supporter since the day I decided I wanted to be a professional singer. She put me through music school, was at every show recording me, waited for hours in the car while I was at my private lessons and arts classes, bought me a laptop and production equipment for me to record music, and constantly gives me words of encouragement of never quitting my dream. She’s been so patient with me and my career and I love and admire her immensely. I’m so lucky to have her and never take it for granted because so many musicians are on their own and don’t have any kind of support. I’m very blessed.
