We had the good fortune of connecting with ella luna and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi ella, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.

The world is so magical and so mundane all the time. i think writing and the creation of music is the only real way to capture that feeling of constant juxtaposition. i love walking through the world listening to songs that make the simple moments seem so sparkly. i think that is the main reason i write music. hearing songs that make everything every day seem monumental and overwhelming makes me feel like i am actually living my life, not just letting it pass by. i want to make songs that make people feel special and seen and overwhelmed. that is what makes me happy. maybe that’s dramatic, but i can’t help it! i like being sensitive, i like that all of my feelings are so big.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
i started making my new album “anything to make it loud” with gregory allison in december of 2021 in his backyard studio in south pasadena. it started as 5 songs and evolved into 9. i got to work with so many amazing musicians to bring the project to life. the songs combine my love of classical and jazz with an indie/alternative songwriting style. the lyricism explores my thoughts on intimacy, domesticity, femininity, queerness, and growing up. i’m excited for people to hear it, i hope hearing it can heal someone in the same way making it healed me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
i love los angeles, it’s such a special place full of special people. i love spending time reading at la tierra de la culebra & lacy park. my la-native bestie grace and i love to get some delicious vegan munch at bulan thai in silverlake, joy cafe in highland park, and just what i kneaded in frogtown. and most of all, i love to see live music. from jazz at ETA or cafe stella to the LA opera to punk shows at the smell to indie showcases hosted by good folk LA or back in the garage, there’s always a show to turn a boring night into something beautiful.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to gregory allison for making the record with me, and to kaylee stenberg for the same and a little bit more. collaborating is the most important part of a creative process in my opinion. while i love the songs i write as i write them, what really makes it special is what other people bring in. hearing saxophone or a string quartet or sparkly mandolin on my songs makes me so emotional, it’s that overwhelming factor i love so much. i also shoutout young queer women. partially for listening to my songs but also just shoutout to young queer women in general. i love women and our minds and spirits and the way we see each other and the way we see the world. most of my favorite works of art and pieces of music are the creation of women seeing other women or reflecting on the experience of being a woman. or of being queer. or both. i want the voices of queer women to be at the forefront of art and literature. i want everyone to have to see the queer and female experience the way we’re forced to see the male and straight experience. shoutout to all the amazing queer women who are making it happen. i hope to be a part of that too.
