We had the good fortune of connecting with Teresa Mercsak and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Teresa, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
As a business owner, there are several habits that have been extremely important and really the only way I could be as successful as I am. Discipline, attention to detail, and taking educated risks are my top three habits I’ve learned and formed over the years.

A lot of people know me to be an extremely hard worker, and I am very detail oriented when it comes to every aspect of the business.

I’ve always been adventurous, but I wouldn’t consider myself a risk taker in my childhood. I followed the rules, listened to my parents, and did what I was told. When I started creatively rebelling, marching to my own drummer, and taking more leaps rather than staying in comfort, the business started blossoming.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The success of Unifier Entertainment, a full-service entertainment company, specializing in high-end corporate acts, cirque-style performers, and unique performance scenarios, is really more of an evolving story that starts as early as childhood.

Throughout grade school in a small town in Ohio, I performed as a marching and concert band musician, a baton twirler (I was 8 years old when I held my first fire baton), and a backstage manager for some of our school plays. I continued in performance as a dancing waiter in college and was heavily active in the arts program even while pursuing a Master of Arts degree in English. I knew one day, even by age 15, I would move to LA and have my hand in the entertainment industry.

In 2000, I moved to California, found myself a cozy career as a college instructor; however, even throughout my 22 years as an educator, I was still heavily involved with the arts. I had met my tribe of people through the Burning Man community in early 2001, starting spinning fire and stilt walking, and before you knew it, I had a small fire troupe, which in later years turned into a small entertainment company with a friend and business partner.

Honestly, it was a hobby for many many years. In 2006, I was at a massive turning point. My business partner and I were at a pivot point and I was no longer fulfilled with teaching. I reevaluated my dreams and goals and knew that I wanted to make this hobby a full-time career. So, I took the leap of faith, quit my job and started putting all my attention and focus into Unifier Entertainment.

Success feels like it happened overnight, but in reality, it was a few years of hard work, long nights glued to my computer, taking risks with money, attending networking events, hundreds of emails, tears, pats on the back, more tears, and then all of a sudden– there was a definitive period of time where I felt like all the hard work had paid off.

…and it continues. Because of the growth of the company, we have two employees and we’re rounding out plans for another successful year, with the goal of potentially opening an event venue in the future.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA is filled with the most amazing food and entertainment, so it depends on who is in town and what that person likes in terms of exploring and cuisine. If it were entirely up to me, I’d spend the days hiking in the Los Angeles Crest Mountains, visiting my favorite restaurants like So Sushi and breakfast at The Nook, hitting a coffee spot with my dog, or grabbing a drink at a wine bar or gastropub. I love experiencing new restaurants, so I’d suggest new places to try. A night at the Magic Castle is always a must, and for touristy spots, we’d hit Grauman’s Theatre and walk down Hollywood Blvd.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shout out to my family, partner of many years, friends, colleagues, industry professionals who have come before me, and my therapist for getting me through it all.
