We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Wilkniss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelly, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
How do I think about risk? Well, I really don’t think about “risk” per se. If you think about the risk involved in every move you make, you’d never get out of bed! That being said, taking action in your business or personal life that would be generally considered risky is imperative. With risk comes empowerment, growth and often success. Even if the so called risk doesn’t pay off right away do not consider it, or yourself, a failure. It is a step, perhaps a faltering one, but a step nevertheless, toward your ultimate success. Thinking about risk and what role it has played in my career/life, led me to consider – what is risk? The definition of risk is: the possibility of something bad happening. Yes, I have made many a move in my career and life that would be considered “risky.” However in doing so, I never thought that something bad would happen. So were those moves risks? You tell me… As in most everything in life, it is all in the way you look at it. Do you see risk or do you see opportunity? My advice, choose the latter.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My Soulful Home is my business name. My tag line reads ~ heart, mind & soul of the home. These are not just words, but what I strive to bring to each client, each interior, each garden, each podcast episode, each video, each blog post and each word I write. In doing so, this is what I believe sets me and my business apart. I am most proud of the fact that I created my business from nothing. That I have showed up in all the ways necessary everyday since my first blog post was published in 2013. That I do truly pour my heart, mind & soul into every aspect of my business, and, the icing on the cake is the pride I feel in the community of kindred spirits that I have been fortunate to gather. Challenges are many in any business, Those I have faced were met with a hard work and an eagerness to learn more and do better. I want everyone to know that in joining me on my podcast, Decorating Tips & Tricks, my blog My Soulful Home, on social media or as a client, that I will help you create the sanctuary we all need our homes to be. For the people who want to reinvent themselves and follow their hearts into a new career, I want those people to know that they can do it! I did and they can too.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Rosebowl Flea market – starting early! Afterwards breakfast burritos from Lucky Boy. Next day the Huntington Gardens for a full day touring around the gardens. Lunch at Juilenne’s in San Marino & some treat yourself shopping at Pearl’s on Mission Street. The Getty and lunch at Malibu Farm. Foodie experience at Grand Central Market with a stop at Eggslut . Then a ride on the Angeles Flight cable car. My yard for cocktails & dinner in the garden.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Peter – who is my north star. He always says to me “You’re doing great, keep going”.
