Meet Lindsay Shaver | Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Shaver and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balance is always a challenge! When you work for yourself, there seems to be endless amounts of work, at all times. As a business grows, that balance can always change too. Which I have definitely experienced in recent months with the move of our business, to a larger location. I would say at least about 75% of my time is spent working, and while this may not seem very balanced to some, I really enjoy my work, and the people I meet through it every day, so I don’t mind having it take up the majority of my life. I do think that setting some boundaries, to avoid overworking yourself can be important. I try not to work past 8pm most nights, but during extra busy times I adjust it to 10pm. Balance is something that is always changing & fluctuating along with my workload. But I’ve definitely learned over the years, that boundaries can be helpful, and that its ok (and healthy) for them to change with your business!

What should our readers know about your business?
DeadRockers is known for specializing in punk rock records, clothing, and style. We definitely have the largest selection of women’s items of anywhere around So Cal as well. We are always growing & expanding our inventory and a lot of people seek us out for our wide selection (currently over 4,000 different items & counting!) There has definitely been challenges with inventory that large, (mostly storage! haha), but constant organizing & inventory updates are daily tasks as well.
We carry a lot of well-known alternative brands and tailor our inventory very carefully to small & independent brands, bands, and artists. Something particularly important to us, small businesses supporting each other!
In 2019, we began manufacturing our own line of exclusive clothing as well, which has a focus on being cruelty free, & producing high quality staple items like leather (faux) jackets & denim vests. Something that was really challenging (and took about 2 years) to bring to life, but so rewarding for us, and a new chapter to explore for DeadRockers. Learning the manufacturing process was eye opening, and I’m still learning more about it every day!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Long Beach has so many great places to explore, all with completely different elements!
For Restaurants: We would definitely have to go to Lola’s for margaritas & tacos. They have 2 locations in Long Beach now and also do a killer brunch!
The Pike on 4th Street is an iconic punk rock pub style restaurant that’s famous for its fish & chips & punk rock nostalgia. (Plus its has a killer juke box too.)
Rasselbock on Atlantic is a great spot for traditional German cuisine and has a vast beer selection too.
Rad Coffee is a great stop for a quick horror-themed brew, a round of pinball, & a vegan pop tart.
Cap a evening off with a trip to Roxanne’s, who have a killer patio, a speakeasy, and even their own distillery on site!
As for places to visit; Retro Row on 4th Street is a pretty iconic stop with lots of great small boutiques, & antique stores including some of our favorites, Songbird, Sneaky Tiki, & Third Eye Records. Then definitely make your way over to the Bixby Knolls / Cal Heights side of town to visit DeadRockers, and Goods on Orange (super cute & highly curated vintage store), and Eclipsed (a new goth inspired boutique on Atlantic).
A trip to Long Beach isn’t complete without a visit to, well, the beach! Down near the marina you can rent boats by the hour & cruise out along the shoreline with your own drinks & snacks. Check out the Queen Mary from the water, and get a sailor’s view of Long Beach, while simultaneously taking in views of Catalina island.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
