We had the good fortune of connecting with KUAN HSUAN LU and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi KUAN HSUAN, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
I started learning art and working for it when I was 15 old. During this journey, I think the most important thing I learned is “respect” and “love”. The definition of respect is broad. Respect for the existence of all different people and ideas, because art is diverse, and so are people. When I was in art high school, I learned not to be afraid of being different. Everyone is unique and beautiful.

Also, I believe in “love”, which makes me always in a good mood and has abundant creative energy. Because in all the processes of working with art, I have been fortunate enough to receive love and support from people to make everything goes well. I’m grateful for all of it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the unique thing about my art is that I love incorporating illustrations into my graphic designs. A successful illustration is always a fun way to make the audience smile or to know more the message to be conveyed from design. My illustrations will not stay the same, I like to change, reorganize and constantly break the rules and frameworks. This may be because I am always pursuing freshness in art.My creative style is about using bold and rich color schemes.

In terms of challenges,”Being yourself” does not equate to making money. expressing my creativity doesn’t always generate income, but I like a challenge! I take this challenge as of playing Mario games by constantly jumping up through different levels.Every time I succeed in jumping into a new level, I gain faith within myself that I can carry on this game. I hold a firm belief that everyone has unlimited potential, which fills me with energy to overcome challenges.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend comes to New York for just one day, I think the best time should be spend in Dumbo. Dumbo is my neighborhood which is also one main attraction that makes me love New York. Dumbo has the best river view of Manhattan. The road of the river side is spacious. Walking from Dumbo’s pier one to pier six and seeing the scenery is really relaxing. And you can take a bus from Dumbo to Green point, where it has plenty of unique coffee shops, and relaxing vibe, as well as culturally diverse stores.

If it was a week long trip, in addition to those famous spot in Manhattan, I highly recommend go to Cold Spring and Beacon of Upstate New York. You only need to take the train for more than an hour to get there and you can enjoy a completely different vibe from Manhattan. It feels like Europe to me, the main street is full of various designer stores and close to Nature. There are mountains on one side and rivers on the other, the air is always fresh. Cold Spring and Beacon are wonderful places for me and my friends. I highly recommend them to travelers.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I was growing up, I watched many movies and was inspired. One of which I was impressed was “Frances Ha”. This is the movie I want to dedicate shoutout. I often recall some parts of this movie as a way to encourage me to stick to what I want to do and believe in myself, no matter how difficult the process is.

In my story, I think everyone around me deserves a lot of credit and recognition. It’s hard to pick just one. From my family, my friends Yeh yu-han, Irma Huang, Emma Tsen, Yu Che, my boyfriend and every great artist in my work team. They are all the best people in the world. They always give me unlimited support, encouragement. love and share the best things with me. They should be very proud of themselves because they are such great people, but they are never conceited. They constantly modify themselves to be better. These are the most precious things I have learned from them.
