We had the good fortune of connecting with Tomboy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tomboy, why did you pursue a creative career?
At first I didn’t think I was good enough to be a musician. I thought modeling was my passion, but really it was a way for me to hide. I love fashion and creating art though image, but I was neglecting the biggest side of myself. My music and creating it. I feel like the universe was the power that pushed me into pursuing music. Opportunities kept falling in my path to the point where I had to make a clear choice whether to pursue music or give up on the dream entirely. Choosing to be a musician was the greatest choice I’ve ever made! Music has saved my life and that’s why I’ve kept coming back to it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a singer, song writer, creative director, director, model and visionary. I also act and dance sometimes too, newly learning pole dancing, but I’m not there yet like the pros are. I am an androgynous artist and I think that’s really represented in my work. I love to write about topics like mental health, being queer, being androgynous, navigating love in that space as some examples. I want fans to be able to know that those unique perspectives can all be found in my music. If my music is a safe space, I’m doing my job right. My journey was not easy, I definitely paid my dues. I’ve been broke, slept on couches, hustled to make ends meet, been in unique situations, but the through line was doing whatever it took to continue creating and following my passion. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned through my journey thus far has been the biggest obstacle we have to face is ourselves. Getting over the narratives we tell ourselves (for me it’s always negative) and trusting that if we love what we do, that’s enough to keep going.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is funny because as I write this, my mom will be in town soon. For our trip we are going to Disneyland because what better place to take someone than there when visiting. I’m also going to do a drag brunch with her at Hamburger Mary’s in Weho because that’s obviously iconic. We are going to hit the beach. We are from the east coast so any excuse to be at the beach in March, we’re taking it! And I can’t forget her first night here I’m taking her to WeHo to see all the lgbtq+ bars they have to offer. In my opinion that’s a perfect start to any trip in LA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout Craig Derry, my first ever vocal coach. He taught me how to trust myself as an artist. That if I trust myself I can actually sing better. Singing, like most sport, is more a matter of the mind. If I have the right breath support and get out of my head on the things I think I “can’t” sing, the better of a singer I will become. He also was the one who pushed me to really pursue my craft and not give up on myself. Through Craig’s class I got to move to LA and pursue music, I found community and I reignited my passion for singing.
