We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandyjoe Artist and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sandyjoe, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
I describe success as perseverance and never giving up on your dreams and goals until you accomplish them. It’s about believing in yourself and working towards where you want to be. Success to me is all those years of hard work and sacrifice finally paying off in my craft. It’s being able to wake up every morning doing music and being able to provide for my family and myself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most proud of my Ep “In My Feelz” I dropped it early this year February 24th. I’m super proud of this project it’s my first EP. I have been putting out singles over the years. It took a year to finish this project mostly due to personal things happening in my life which caused delays and setbacks. There were definitely times where I felt discouraged like life kept knocking me down and I was never going to get my project done. Now looking back I appreciate the hardships and obstacles because it taught me perseverance and through all the chaos I created something special. My sound has definitely matured from my previous work. I feel as though I’ve created a style and a sound for myself. I think with this project I allowed myself to experiment with sounds and melody lines. I didn’t place limitations on myself or boxed myself in. I just made music that I love. I would say this project is my best work yet. With that said I wouldn’t have done this without these amazing producers and engineers like Ek Darkurai my producer whom I’ve been working with for 6 years now Toxik, Broskibeatz and Harz who I recently started working with last year. I also have some dope features Astreaux Guillotine and Jdam. You guys should check them out their super talented.
Growing up my father was a music fanatic. He wasn’t artistic meaning he didn’t sing or play an instrument but he had great taste in music. He truly appreciated the art. He definitely played a huge impact on why I love music so much. He introduced me to a wide range of music from jazz, rnb, rock even country. I listened to pretty much everything. My dad has a huge music collection in our garage, which was pretty much a music library. I spent hours listening to music on my little cd player. I wrote my first song at age nine. It was horrible pretty sure I have the lyrics stashed away in my song book. We would set up mini concerts at my house. My parents would invite our neighbors over for my siblings and I to perform. Me being the lead singer while my siblings were the backup dancers. So my parents were always very supportive of my dream. My dad bought me my first R&B album Dairy by Alicia keys. I listened to that album a million times took it everywhere with me till it got all scratched up and he had to buy me another one. Alicia Keys is a big influence of mine. The first R&b song I learned was “Fallin’”. I sang that song so much my family forced me to learn something else but yeah, I wanted to be like her.
To be an artist takes a lot of hard work, dedication and consistency. You definitely need thick skin to persevere in this industry. You have to be able to take rejection and be prepared for people criticizing you. The key for me is to focus on my craft and not let the outside noise distract me. I know I’m still embarking on my journey. It’s not always beautiful but I’m making beauty out of the ugly parts and learning as I go. I knew from a young age I wanted to be a singer. This is what makes me happy, this is what fills the void in my soul. I knew in order for this to happen I had to make sacrifices so I moved from Florida to Los Angeles to pursue my dream. No family no money but I knew I had to get here. I was determined to make it happen for myself. In this life you can’t waste time wondering and dreaming what If. I’m proud of myself for what I’ve accomplished so far and as I keep saying its only UP FROM HERE!
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as an artist is to trust my instincts, trust my musical direction. To always be my authentic self. The more you know yourself as an artist the more you can’t be persuaded to be someone else you’re not.
I want the world to know who Sandyjoe is. I want them to hear my music and for it to matter to people. I want my music to inspire others to give them hope when their having a bad. To put them in a good mood when their down. I want young girls and boys to know that if you want something in life you have to work for it nothing comes easy, Don’t worry about what others think. It might not make sense to your friends or your family but keep pushing forward and believe in yourself because you hold the key to your future and to my young adults its never too late to go after a dream
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite places to go is the beach. I’m a pisces so I love the ocean. So I would take them to one of my favorite spots in Malibu called Point Dune. It’s a nice little hike overlooking the ocean so well get a really nice view. We’ll also get some Korean bbq, ever since I moved to LA I’ve been obsessed with Korean bbq. I don’t have a favorite spot every Korean bbq I’ve tried have been delicious. I love museums and learning about astrology so I would do a little trip to the Griffith Observatory and maybe have a little picnic after on the lawn.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
