We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathaniel Semsen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nathaniel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I originally never aspired to build a career around content creation, that was until I joined Lyon Bros. Lyon Bros was a semi-viral YouTube band my friends and I were a part of where we recreated popular meme songs and fortnite dances as a six piece band. I loved the positive impact I felt we were having on this online “band kid” community we had built and I started to gain more of a following on my personal YouTube in the peak fame of Lyon Bros. Then COVID hit, of course, and we stopped making as much content, so I figured I would give content creation a shot at home in my dad’s office. I started posting on TikTok for about a year before I gained about 100K followers overnight over my first viral video. That video was Episode 1 of the series I was just launching, Singin Thru The MCU, a series of one-minute original songs summarizing each movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. My new (and much larger) audience seemed to love my series so since then I have been grinding away at catching up to where the MCU currently stands (just releasing Episode 20!). In the past two years since then, I’ve taken content creation and building my personal brand very seriously, by expanding to every other social platform even including Twitch streaming multiple times a week. People on the outside looking in might think that it’s a breeze, but I can tell you as a one-man-band of sorts, there is so much that goes into the behind the scenes of being a solo content creator. It’s because of this that I deeply admire all of my fellow mutuals also building their personal brands along side me!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am extremely proud of my series Singin Thru The MCU because of how much freedom I have when creating each song. I take a ton of inspiration from the Musical Theatre genre and how they use musical devices to communicate different parts of a story. Many times I’ll make some extremely vague or layered reference that only I will ever know just for the heck of it. Also, so I can later explain all the easter eggs I planted in future interviews and people will go, “Wow, those are so thought-out and cool!” That’s the dream.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This isn’t entirely local for me, but I am a huge mini golf fan, so if I really wanted to have a fun time with friends visiting I would probably take them to my favorite mini golf spot in Sherman Oaks. I also adore my school’s campus (USC) so I would definitely have coffee or lunch with my friend either on campus or in the USC village.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m very thankful for my time in Lyon Bros for teaching me how to start navigating the internet as a semi-famous influencer. There were definitely lessons that were learned in terms of what comments to focus on when reading 100 positive comments and 1 negative. That’s a lesson that I honestly don’t believe I will ever fully learn but I can say I’m definitely further in that journey than I would’ve been without Lyon Bros’s success.
