We had the good fortune of connecting with Ricky Reidling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ricky, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Ever since a young child I have always had this creative gene in me. It was mostly daydreaming because growing up in a small rural town in the south I never thought I would have the opportunity to have accomplished what I have at this point in my life and be where I am. I am beyond grateful as I love all aspects of the filmmaking process from writing, directing and sometimes jumping in front of the camera. Editing the film and watching actors bring my stories to life with my words and my composers music is the icing on the cake. I still get blown away when I write something so deep with emotion and watch my actors get so into the scene and I just let them run with it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I first started out in L.A many years ago I did a ton of background work just to get time of film sets. I worked on several T.V pilots and films that never made it off the cutting room floor or I never got credit for. It was really frustrating and thats when I decided to start my own entertainment company. It’s always scary doing something new like Directing etc… but for me it’s always been the case where I have worked with such amazing talent they really don’t need direction. They know what I want and they bring it. Actors and crew both have always been amazed at how I can make everything great with production value working with such a small team. I feel like everything I do is a step above of the last project. Having a T.V series produced by a cable network is one of my biggest achievements. Were there challenges? Yes, indeed. But I have no regrets. People will always critique you and I am use to that. Films and series much bigger than me has received brutal reviews but you get use to it. I don’t even read reviews anymore but it does make my day when I get emails or messages from fans telling me how much they loved what we done.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When we first decided to move to Palm Springs 8 years ago all our friends asked why we wanted to move out here, its more of a retirement community. Next thing you know they were all moving out here! Michael and I still laugh about it. I call Palm Springs the “Little Hollywood.” There is always something going on here and is never a boring time. From live theatre to fabulous restaurants and nightlife never a boring moment. If friends were visiting I would definitely take them downtown and see some of the touristy stuff like the Marilyn Monroe statue, museum and just seeing the local art everywhere is pretty darn cool. There is a ton of filming that also takes place out here from commercials, fashion shoots and of course feature films. We have casinos which is always fun time but my favorite time is hanging with friends on the weekends bbq and pool time. I like our home time and with our cats Milo, Moby & Mady. All brothers, they can be a handful, but are loved.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Michael is my rock and has been so supportive in all my endeavors. He would take days off from work if I needed a extra hand to help with filming. We recently celebrated being together 25 years and I wouldn’t change a thing. Every project I have ever done has had a character named “Michael,” in honor of him. He knows how hard I work as well as all my actors and crew. I have got to work with some amazing people through the years in front of and behind the camera and I can say I am most grateful for all of them.
