We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrance Pratt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terrance, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was important for me to create a business that celebrated Black culture. You’ll find creatively that everything from story narrative to lighting Black people’s skin for video, that our culture isn’t always understood and appreciated. I was confident that I could build a team of creatives who could offer companies an authentic solution to that issue.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Culture Loupe is a creative marketing company headquartered in Chicago, IL. The name simply means that we have a magnifying glass on the culture. To that end, what separates us from other companies is the in-culture lens that we use to solve problems. We work directly with clients to identify their challenges, understand their audience, and create solutions that resonate with the audiences they speak to.
We are excited about our expanded strategy, production, and digital marketing capabilities. We’re still a boutique agency at the moment, but we’re rapidly expanding and that’s exciting.
Some of the things that we’ve learned along the way is to make continuous deposits into advancing your learning and capabilities, even if doing so requires spending money with no foreseeable return. We won a lot of business by being in position to win when opportunities arise.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Chicago is full of cool things to do. If you know a Soho House member, that’s always a cool place to hang out and get drinks and food. Chicago has a number of cool museums to check out. Museum hopping from the MCA to the Art Institute, and then to the south side for the DuSable Museum of Black History and the Museum of Science and Industry. I’d say to rent a Segway or Bicycle and hit the lake trail is always dope. I love taking the Architectural boat cruise through downtown Chicago. Lastly, head up to the Signature Room at the Hancock Building for food and drinks, Cite’ has a great view and good food and is blocks away from Navy Pier. Lastly, Elevation Worldwide curated an art exhibit for the Willis Tower that is up until August. Check that our and then go to the Sky Deck for a cool experience.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out Munson Steed, CEO for Rolling Out for his support as a mentor and client for allowing me to use his resources to help master my craft. II have to shout out Nana Kofi Nti of 510 Media, for being an amazing business coach, strategist, and friend. I’d like to shout out Kee Sherman, Creative Director for Mielle Organics for allowing me to help bring her creative vision to life. Lastly, I’d like to recommend “The E Myth” for all of those individuals, who know they have more to offer the world, but are unsure of how to take a successful leap from a job into entrepreneurship.
