We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Ruby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process for starting my own business was that I worked in so many corporate salons, where I had a conform to what they wanted to do, and the businesses were run on fear, and I wanted to create a salon in an environment and a culture where that wasn’t a thing and so that’s one of the reasons why I didn’t choose to put my name on the wall that I’m calling in Flamingo Lounge because I wanted independent hairstylist to work for me that have really good energy and good work ethic still Not have a negative attitude and that’s where flamingo lounge was started at what I wanted it to be a safe space for people to connect, and I really wanted to create a community because I’m really good at doing that so one of the things that I am known for is that people always make friends when they come to my Salon .
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So I believe that like attracts like just like the law of attraction and if you wanna be a good stylist, you have to put that good energy out into the world and I always say that your clients reflect who you are as a person. Growing up in New York I always hung out around musicians and went out a lot and net work that way so my clientele has always been really creative fun energetics, artist. Moving to LA just accelerated that times 100 and I feel like there isn’t that many creative hairstylist, who know precision, hair, cutting and coloring in Los Angeles compared to New York so that sets me apart from other stylus year all of my clientele they tell me that they haven’t been able to find a stylist here that is willing to Give them a really edgy look. A lot of these styles I’ve been doing in Williamsburg since 2004. And because I have always been attracted to musicians, it just accelerated that business a lot when I moved out here and I do most of the pop punk alt girly is here and I love it and I’m known for two-tone hair, color, and mullets and wolf cuts just really creative fun color, and textured haircuts that are easy to style.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I never thought that I would love Los Angeles as much and more than New York City but I do and here are some of my favorite spots that I love my favorite restaurant in LA is mother Wolf, my favorite places for brunch/breakfast are squirrel, courage bagels, huckleberry, my favorite places to see live music are the Wiltern, the echo, and the palladium. I’m really into coffee culture, so my favorite coffee shops in Los Angeles are dinosaur coffee on sunset, Madlab on sunset. And I mean being from New York you could never go wrong with a cup of coffee from Blue Bottle. I like to get the New Orleans cold coffee. It’s so delicious.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So for me growing up in New York City and starting my career and Manhattan I want to thank all of my mentors that helped me become the stylist that I am today, I worked in a salon in New York with 150 people and I had so many mentors that took me under their wing, and taught me not only how to be a good stylist, but also how to talk to people and be a good educator.
