We had the good fortune of connecting with Phoenix Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phoenix, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
To be very honest when I set out to be a freelance videographer/content creator. I put absolute zero thought into the fact that I was starting a business. My mindset at the time was to make videos and get paid to do it. That was the dream. I soon reached my dream and realized there was far more that comes with the lifestyle of being a freelancer than just providing a service. Accounting,Marketing, Networking, Anxiety and Stress etc.
Some of these tasks are much more fun than others. But if they go ignored, things in your business will fall apart or never grow to a point of sustainability. After 7 years of being a freelancer. Only in the past year has my mindset shifted from being an individual to becoming a business.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Sometimes I think of myself as two seperate people. Phoenix the creative and Phoenix the business owner. Sometimes I just want to create and not think about business at all. Other times I want to create systems and structure to my business and expand much beyond just my own creativity and limitations. They have found a way to co-exist. Where most of the time I’m working on my business as I enjoy making content for clients in an array of different niches. With the other time I have, I’ve created a YouTube Channel called “The Artist Connection” were I tell stories about the tattoo industry and the people in it. (A passion of mine)
Lately I’ve been learning the importance of collaborating with others in the business as well as the channel to multiply my output and efficiency. It’s been a learning curve but a necessary step to get to where I want to be. Regardless if it’s for my business or my YouTube Channel. I truly love to tell stories and enjoy making documentary style work as it’s real and raw in a world were we see a lot of staged and untrue media.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To me LA is a living breathing place. I truly enjoy just driving around and seeing the city switch from one vibe to another. But my favorite spot has got to be any beach in the early morning before it gets to crowded. In a major city where it’s always fast paced. Taking time to be in nature away from the hustle and bustle is nice.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest supporters are my Parents and my Wife. They pour love and motivation into me at all times from near and afar.
Besides them, the list of people that have helped me on my journey are far to long to list out. To all the people and mentors that have poured their time and energy on to me. Know that I strive everyday to make sure your efforts were not in vain.
