We had the good fortune of connecting with Cory “Showtime” Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cory “Showtime”, why did you pursue a creative career?
Ignorance? Naivety? But honestly tho, it probably comes from my mother. She was a teacher but she was also an artist, sculptor, and photographer. I was bound to get some creativity thru either genetics or osmosis. I joke about ignorance and naivety because artists and creatives are among the worst paid professions. But the beauty of getting involved in the arts is that there’s no time limit to your success. Hell, the phrase “you’re nobody til somebody kills you” has never been more appropriate because artists are always the most popular right after they pass away.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I learned early on in my life the power of laughter. I was a chubby kid that grew into a chubby adult, so learning to move with the jokes was easier than rolling with the punches for me. Growing up, my role in the family was the comic relief. Whenever things got too tense I was right there with a laugh. As I got older, I realized that comedy was my gift to the world. Life is hard, and laughter really is the best medicine. It helps us reset, relax, recalibrate, and refocus. Laughing at the problems life throws at us doesn’t make the problems go away, but it makes them easier to deal with.
I started stand up comedy when I was 11 years old, at the Oldemeyer Center in Seaside, CA. I got dared to do the talent show by the popular kid in class, did great, and been at it ever since. I decided to create Robinson Comedy Services as both kind of a live production and comedy consulting company to help comedians and comedy clients alike. Being a comedian is HARD. We get on stage with only our charisma and anecdotes and entertain with only that. It’s a difficult process to master and just as hard to keep up with, because for some odd reason, EVERYONE thinks they’re a comedian! It is an art, a science, and a skill, so its not just something you can do because Jane from HR thought you were funny that one time by the water cooler. It takes dedication.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, I’d take them to Sushi Sumo down in Hawthorne to literally grab some sushi, from the conveyor belt. Ideally I’d have some Lakers, Dodgers, or Rams tickets for us to go checkout a game. I do multiple comedy shows a week so a couple nights would be occupied there, but I’d make sure we hung out at The World Famous Comedy Store for the vibes. Lastly, I’d make sure we caught a concert at the Hollywood Bowl because its such a great place to hear music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to my parents, my friends and family that have supported me over the years. Whether it’s coming to shows, sharing my videos, to giving me a couch to crash on for the night, you’re all appreciated. And also a big shoutout to all the people I don’t know. Because your biggest supporter is most likely a stranger. A special shout out to Ngaio Bealum, Christopher “Kid” Reid, Geoff Brown, Kirk McHenry, and any veteran comedian that’s taken me under their wing.
