We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Cera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

Risk taking is a crucial component of any career or business. I’m a celebrity fashion stylist who had a huge comfortable career on the east coast and I decided to risk it all for what I was passionate about, LA’s Celebrity Scene.

In the beginning of my career, I faced numerous challenges, because of the risks I had to take to follow my passion.
Without any industry connections, I relentlessly knocked on many doors until I got my foot in one door. I continued knocking until one door became 2 doors, and so on. I honestly didn’t know thing 1 about being a stylist. I just knew I had a passion for it.

My journey since then has continued to be fueled by risk taking, hard work, diligence, persistence, fearlessly asking questions and an unwavering passion for empowering others through style.

I would not be where I am today by staying comfortable.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

What sets my journey apart is that I tackled it on my own. Despite having little family support and a couple of skeptical friends, my relentless passion and determination pushed me forward. I started as an intern and quickly climbed the ladder, eventually landing the role of Gloria Estefan’s Stylist. From world tours and press events to award shows, my life was intricately woven into their schedules.

Aiming to become Gloria Estefan’s stylist, wasn’t a cakewalk. I set my sights on that goal and shared my aspirations with everyone around me.

I guess I unknowingly manifested my future. I persisted with monthly resume updates, each time creatively tweaking the color to stand out. I followed up with phone calls. Patience, persistence and diligence were key, sending emails, monthly portfolio submissions, and follow-up calls. For over a year, the silence was palpable until that game-changing moment when a door cracked open. I got a chance as an assistant on her album cover shoot and music video, which I grabbed with both hands.

For almost two intense weeks, I navigated the challenges posed by a demanding stylist, proving my worth. Once the project wrapped up, I thanked them for the opportunity and my efforts paid off as I soon found myself booked as the stylist for Gloria’s music video. That was the start of an exhilarating journey, styling not only Gloria Estefan but also other Latin stars like Shakira, Alejandro Fernandez, Jon Secada, and many more.

This experience has etched valuable lessons into my journey – chase your dreams tenaciously, persist even when met with silence, remain true to yourself, embrace continuous learning, and sometimes, enduring challenges is a small price to pay for long-term triumphs.

As I progress on my path of styling and costume designing, I’m a firm believer that once you’ve achieved success, it’s essential to give back. Sharing knowledge becomes crucial, imparting what I’ve learned to the next generation of stylists. That’s why I’m currently providing week-long training sessions and coaching, aiming to pass on my insights and, hopefully, help young, aspiring stylists avoid years of trial and error.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely all of the Hollywood things. Hike, Explore China town, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Griffith Observatory, See a musical at Hollywood Pantages Theatre, Drive to Malibu, The Friends Experience in Long Beach, a show at The Laugh Factory, Attend a gig at the Greek Theatre, Walk through the Bradbury Building, The Grove for shopping and a movie, Movie at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Eat lunch at the Grand Central Market and definitely Dine at the Magic Castle.

Some of my favorite restaurants: Sushi Fumi, Cross Roads Kitchen, Eately roof top, Catch, Cafe Gratitude, Mercado, Jones Hollywood, shopping at Erewhon is always an experience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jen Herda is a huge part of my story. she has coached me through many moments where I would have given up, and reminded me how powerful and loved that I am. She supported unconditionally and having her in my camp plays a big part of how I am still in the game.
