We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Magon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Commercial Real Estate (CRE) is the exact opposite of residential real estate. When people think real estate, they think of houses, realtors putting signs on every street corner, and listing many amenities they want in a dream home like a pool, game room, or spacious kitchen. Commercial real estate is nothing like that; it is numbers game. It is a branch of real estate that focuses on analytical facts instead of emotional desires. That may sound boring, but it’s actually really exciting! Like the stock market, numbers go up and down, buying and selling is happening constantly, and investors scour the market to find the next best deal. There is so much attention to detail in the numbers because the investors, brokers, buyers, and sellers are dealing with millions, even billions of dollars! Commercial real estate, multifamily (apartment buildings) in particular, is a great way to generate wealth, and I hope that discussing it in detail gives more people the knowledge and excitement to invest in it.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am co-founder of “The Commercial Broker”, a commercial real estate team that is defining a new wave of the CRE business. I am most excited to be a part of something that is built from the ground up – something that takes a new approach to the business. We approach commercial real estate in a way that allows veteran investors to continue getting the crisp and refined service they have always known while adding a refreshing twist that also caters to the “rookies” of the business – newcomers who want to become proficient in investing but might not know where to start. We pride ourselves on diversity within the team, with members coming from multiple different racial, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Another highlight is the fact that the team is made up of a majority of women. With CRE being a male-dominated industry, it is exciting to see our female members’ success and recognition. We are energetic, enthusiastic, and committed, and our goal is to showcase the excitement of the industry with fresh perspectives and consistency.

I had never initially thought about doing real estate. I trained in dance my entire life, so I thought maybe I can be a choreographer one day. I did well in high school, so I went to college thinking I could get a good job and be set for the rest of my life. I am good with numbers, so I ended up going to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and majoring in Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies. I had my mind set on doing something with industrial engineering until Covid caused an internship I had lined up to be cancelled over the summer going into my senior year of college. What was I going to do with all this free time? Get my real estate license because why not. I got it about 3 months later, graduated university, and still had no job lined up. Yes, I had my license, but I had no idea what I was going to do with it. A few more months went by, and I had found an ad on Indeed for a commercial real estate position and applied because I thought it was something different but would still allow me to use my engineering knowledge and license at the same time. I got it. That is where I met my mentors, Posh and Akash, we formed a team, and “The Commercial Broker” was born.

All of this was not easy. Being young with so many options, it’s hard to decide what is right for you. It is difficult hearing that people your age have an entire life plan with specific courses, job titles, and companies written out in pure detail. From my experience, it is okay to not know things. Sometimes something falls into your lap that you end up liking. It is okay to try things out to get a feel for where you really want to be. I have learned that it is so important to see end goals for yourself rather than planning every single step along the way. I saw myself doing my own thing with my own people, creating, running something myself, and building something extraordinary. And since starting The Commercial Broker, I have learned to be consistent. There will be times where nothing feels like it is progressing, but I see it like going to the gym, or in my case, dancing. You don’t see results the first day you train, let alone a week after training. You only see progress if you train consistently over time. Consistency and patience = results.

I am still far from where I want to be, but I know that being consistent and staying positive will get me to reach my goals. I look up to those, specifically, who are honest and willing to share how they got to where they are. It’s not all about glorifying the successes, it is about sharing the hardships and downturns that make the successes that much more special. I want to be that for others and really highlight the importance of communication and transparency when it comes to being “successful”.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my parents and my mentors, Posh and Akash. I am very fortunate that my parents have been there for me my entire life, constantly supporting me and the decisions I make. Additionally, I feel extremely lucky to have found mentors like Posh and Akash who have pushed me to become better and who have given me so much knowledge and wisdom that I am excited to build upon as I continue in the CRE business.
