We had the good fortune of connecting with Ard Su and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ard, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I’ve been taking on more projects related to Asian identity. Recently, I’ve been collaborating with a film team on a project that explores the younger Asian American generation’s struggle with understanding their current lives and their connection to their heritage. I’ve also been taking personal commissions that are related to this theme. It brings me joy and a sense of pride that my work is resonating within my community and perhaps adding fresh colors and new styles to the younger generation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Recently I found myself integrating elements of form and thinking from Chinese painting and calligraphy into my art. It’s somewhat unintentional, resulting in subtle changes, but I’m happy with the direction it’s taking. The merging of oriental influences and a touch of surrealism creates a unique atmosphere that I’m truly enjoying.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite ramen place. Though it’s very likely to spark a heat debate with my friends about the No.1 ramen place.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out to Yunyi Dai. She is the illustrator lead on the NPR Next Generation team. We’ve worked together on several projects, visualizing individual stories happening in various states.
