Meet Jared Cohn | Filmmaker/author/inventor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jared Cohn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jared, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
There is no attempt or thought management on my work life balance anymore. My life, my personal life, my business life are the same life. Everything I do has something to do with the journey of the work I’m doing. I love my family, friends, I value relationships, but I am on a journey and nobody is going to do the work for me.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a independent filmmaker, artist, one man brand/company, I do need to things that draw attention to the things I’m doing. My book 50 Movies Made: Lessons Learned on a Filmmaker’s journey was written to help the outreach of my own brand. I’m constantly making movie after movie, and creating other things all in the efforts to establish a place in this crowded industry. For me it was never one thing, it’s a series of many things that got me any visibility, and I keep doing many things. New content, new products. Once something is done, I’m on to the next. There is little to no hesitation once something is deemed a viable, good thing to do. I just do it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t get out too much, and I am a creature of habit. So if they came and it was on a Saturday I would be watching UFC, if they came on a Tuesday I would be watching UFC. The rest of the week I would be working. I’m not an exciting person. If there was an event or something, we could go, or I was trying to show them the city I would prefer somebody else designed that type of itinerary.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a special shoutout to Yang Shao, CEO of Tilta, and the entire Tilta team for believing in the Zombie Rig, a new product which is the winner of Cinegear’s 2023 Technical achievement award in sound.
I first arrived at the Tilta offices with a prototype of a product I invented called The Zombie Rig. It was rudimentary but it worked. I had spent basically all my money working on this, machining parts, working with engineers, fabric and parts makers.. the list goes on. The product is designed to help boom pole operators hold the boom pole with less strain in a very unique way. Thankfully, Yang was open to innovation and in fact had began the amazing Tilta Developer Program, a program for inventors and product designers. The Zombie Rig is now in development at Tilta and will become a real Tilta product in the next year or so.
I’d like to thank Max Nikov, Dave Green, the entire Tilta team here in the states as well as the team in Shenzhen, China, head designer Yaolong Luo for their work.
