Meet FANGFANG HAN | Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with FANGFANG HAN and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi FANGFANG, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I previously worked in a high-paced work environment, providing fashion design solutions to clients. I often found myself on the move. Although I enjoy interacting with a diverse array of people and sharing experiences, I rarely have time for my personal growth. My focus revolved around ensuring client satisfaction at work and indulging in the trappings of a so-called high-quality life outside of it, often linked to consumerism. Work took precedence, and my own well-being was often overlooked over time, my perspective on work-life balance has transformed especially during Covid. I’ve grown to recognize the value of dedicating more time to meaningful pursuits, like quality time with family and friends, self-care and particularly my passion for illustration. Finding solace in the encouragement of both my audience and fellow artists, I now aim to discover happiness in everyday life, infusing my illustrations with this joy and using them to inspire others through my unique insights and curiosity. In today’s digitalized world, despite an abundance of connections, it can often feel as though we’re more isolated and under increased pressure due to algorithms, economic strains, climate concerns, and global conflicts. I wish more people could aspire to work to live and forge their own path to enlightenment, striking a harmonious balance between work and life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an illustrator based in London, and my work spans children’s non-fiction publishing, advertising, and editorial content. What sets my work apart is the bold and vibrant use of colors, combined with simple forms that carry a hand-drawn and warm aesthetic. My inspiration draws from the world of printmaking techniques and French comics, which infuse my creations with a unique flavor. What I’m most proud of is my commitment to in-depth research before beginning the design process. It’s a strength that adds depth and insight to my projects, making them more meaningful.
The journey to where I am today professionally wasn’t necessarily easy, as there are no shortcuts in the creative world. I’ve constantly experimented across various styles and media, learning along the way by receiving feedback from audiences, peers, and fellow creative practitioners. The lessons I’ve learned is the importance of persistence and adaptability. I believe that a genuine passion for illustration and a lifelong commitment to nurturing creativity are the driving forces behind my ability to take on more projects.
What I want the world to know about me is that I’m driven by the desire to connect with people through my illustrations, especially in public spaces. For instance, one of my projects involved creating an animation for the London Underground, which not only celebrated its rich history but also humanized the space. My unique skill lies in my ability to keenly observe and provide special insights, offering interesting and thought-provoking visual solutions that resonate with audiences, ultimately telling stories that captivate and engage. In addition, due to my previous experience in fashion, I’m merging my illustrations with a diverse range of products, including fashion items, homeware, and stationery. This expansion comes in response to numerous messages from my social media audience, expressing their desire to own tangible pieces of my work. I’m immensely grateful to receive such positive and enthusiastic feedback and support. It means the world to me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a London-based illustrator, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing London’s vibrant tapestry of art, culture, and history. If you’re planning a week in this incredible city, here’s my personal recommendation: Start your adventure with a warm welcome at a local pub and a leisurely walk along the Thames to soak in the iconic landmarks. Explore artistic treasures at the British Museum, Tate Modern, Tate Britain and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Don’t miss a night at the West End, and make time to shop for unique art crafts in Covent Garden, my favourite is Benjamin Pollock’s Toyshop. It is a hidden gem for those who appreciate paper engineering, cards, books, and cinema boxes. To connect with nature, visit Hyde Park and Kew Gardens. And indulge in diverse cuisines at Borough Market. To make your London experience even more diverse and fascinating, don’t forget to explore the creative markets and handcrafted communities in the Brick Lane area and other seasonal creative fairs, such as London’s illustrator fair and DIY market. London is a treasure trove for creative souls and small businesses, and this itinerary reflects the best it offers. Enjoy!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I feel fortunate to have had the guidance and support of my peers and mentors who generously shared their valuable experiences and inspiration. I’m especially grateful to my friend, Shimeng Jiang, a wonderful illustrator and artist, for recommending me for this interview opportunity.
