We had the good fortune of connecting with Yazmin Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yazmin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Embarking on a career in interior design and eventually starting my own business was never a question for me; it was a clear and deliberate choice. This ambition was deeply influenced by my father, who, having started his own business at a young age, naturally instilled an entrepreneurial spirit in me.

Recognizing that interior design demands technical skills, a deep understanding of processes, and project knowledge acquired through hands-on experience, I was determined to gear myself for this path. Collaborating with esteemed companies such as HBA, Soho House, and DesignAgency has been instrumental in providing me with invaluable experience. Working through all phases of projects, including openings, has further enriched my expertise in the field.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Reaching the point where I am today hasn’t been an easy journey, but I consider myself fortunate and am deeply grateful for it. My background isn’t one of affluence or luxury, which makes being a designer crafting such spaces a juxtaposition to the life I experienced growing up. While not a challenge, it has certainly filled me with pride to see how far my creativity and talent have developed.

In the realm of design, I’ve discovered the importance of resilience and diligence. Despite not coming from a privileged background, I’ve learned to navigate this world with tenacity. At the end of the day, I love what I do; it brings me joy, and I am committed to continuing on this path.

I want people to understand that Sentinium Design has grown from the seed of a simple belief—that everyone deserves to feel special, happy, and comforted when they enter a space. Regardless of where they are, whether at home, a restaurant, or their workplace, everyone deserves an environment that evokes positive emotions. Sentinium Design is dedicated to creating spaces that leave a lasting, memorable impact on people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love showing people around LA; there’s something for everyone.

On Saturdays, you’ll catch me at Black Elephant in Burbank for coffee, or grabbing a vanilla latte at Alfred Coffee on Melrose Place. Atwater Village has cool shops, and Blu Jam is my go-to for brunch.

Brentwood’s farmers market is a favorite, and I can’t resist the hand rolls at Kazunori in Santa Monica.

To wrap up the day, I enjoy sunset views from Soho Warehouse’s rooftop, followed by a stroll in the arts district. LA’s got it all!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If I were to identify someone who has consistently offered unwavering support in my life, it would undoubtedly be my mother. She has been the pillar of encouragement, allowing me to dream freely and pursue any career path I desired. I firmly believe that having such support during childhood is crucial in fostering the confidence to pursue diverse aspirations and believe in the possibility of achieving any level of success.

On a professional note, I extend my gratitude to my mentor, Coach Callahan, who has been a guiding force, offering valuable business advice and helping me navigate through turbulent and stressful professional situations. Having a mentor in the business world has played a pivotal role in my preparation, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the support and guidance provided by Coach.
