We had the good fortune of connecting with LYRQ and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LYRQ, what do you attribute your success to?
Considering this question, it is hard to pinpoint just one important factor that constitutes my success since there are so many moving parts that go into what makes up LYRQ the brand. From my hardworking team, manager, advocates and supporters, to my skill of storytelling and songwriting that I have been cultivating for hours at a time every day, for more than a decade. All these crucial segments play a major roll in the success I have had and know I will continue to have in the future. That being said, there is a constant thread that ties together and propels all these elements forward and that is my unwavering determination. It is the same determination that despite being told as a young girl; from a lesser known Caribbean island that music wasn’t a “viable option” as a means to provide for myself, that compelled me to take a risk in leaving my home and pursuing music in the US. That persistence led me to Los Angeles not soon after the narrow escape of a Category 5 hurricane in my homeland and made way to a major contract offer in the first week of being in the US. It is the reason I was able to secure my first major placement in under 6 months and my first platinum award certification in under year. The time that follow these good fortunes have not been easy, but in my book, the steadfastness I possess continues to be pre-eminent and a major catalyst for my continued success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a young black girl raised in the Caribbean, I grew up listening to an unconventional mix of classics from artists like Celine Dion, Cece Winans, Michael Jackson and a rock/punk music. I fell in love with rock because of the storytelling and realized that I had a deep desire to tell my own stories with the music I wrote as well. Studying the music I listened to gave way to experimenting with different tones, sonics and vocal effects. As the years went on, seeing influences like Rihanna, Kehlani and Victoria Monet, I developed a knack for weaving catchy, unique melodies and melded that with my distinctive soulful/tropical tone. To this day I have never heard another person that sounds quite like LYRQ and I am very proud of the time and work that went into that. In 2023 I released my first single as an artist and the road to get there was by no means an easy one. I battled a lot of set backs and second guessing whether it was too early to step out of the songwriting lane that I had been in for years prior. Even though the end goal was always to be an artist and release my own music, I still worried about insignificant things like whether or not my music would be accepted by those who heard it. It took years of me not only truly falling in love with my music and realizing that my opinion in how I felt about my craft was the most important one, but also reconnecting with the purpose for wanting to put it all on the line for music in the first place. I want to be an artist because the act of creating fills me with joy and completion. I love singing and I love expressing my thoughts through song. There is not a day or a moment that goes by where I am not humming a tune under my breath or singing a melody in my head. I know that if I were to wake up every day and all that I get to do is create music, that I would have a life worth living. There is no other dream that inspires me to the degree that creating music does. I want the world to know that have embraced music as purpose in this life and that I’ve made a promise to myself to pursue and give it my all, knowing that not everyone will recognize their purpose in this lifetime. I hope that the ones who connect to me can embrace my gift with the same love that I put into it and allow that light to feed joy, encouragement and life into them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am personally more of a homebody who prefers intimate home cooked dinners and game nights but during the weekend of that friend visiting I would definitely take them to some of the highlights I’ve experienced in LA like Bubba Gumps on the Santa Monica pier or the Hollywood walk of fame. We would most definitely take a spin on Rodeo Drive to check out some signature scents at the different perfumeries and if they were into it and the weather was behaving-, a beach visit to Venice or Malibu beach. As far as the food goes, we would start off our weekend at Burbank having some Korean BBQ and then having some Babussa in the evening. Saturday would lead us to The Boiling Crab for some delectable gumbo and Dungeness. Then we would end off the weekend on Sunday at my absolute favorite place in Los Angeles to eat Little Tokyo’s Hakata Ikkosha
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wanna give a shout out to my tribe and supporters. From my immediate family members-, mom, dad, mama, sisters, aunts and cousins. To my soul sistas who have not only supported me every step of the way with my wild dreams, but cheered me on through the highs and comforted me through the lows. For the ones who checked up on me those nights when I was doing back to back sessions in studio and made sure I was eating/staying hydrated and getting enough sleep. To the ones who offered their kind words of belief, encouragement and the occasional cup of coffee and whatever help I needed in that moment to the best of their ability. I love each and every one of you guys with every fiber of my being. My tribe may not be monstrous, but it is mighty and I do this all for them! I also wanna send love to my little fur babies who stay up with me at all odd hours listening to the crazy words I spin together lending me their comfort and company.
