Meet Anthony McDuffie Jr. | Author, Motivational Speaker, Poet and Founder of Grit, Grind and Glory

We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony McDuffie Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
In October 2023, I visited Chowchilla Women’s Prison with the intention of inspiring hope, resilience, and redemption by sharing my story. My movement and book, Grit, Grind, and Glory, had a profound impact on the incarcerated women at Chowchilla Women’s Prison during my visit. It helped them realize that their stories are just as important and valid as anyone else’s. It provided them with the inspiration to pursue a path of positivity. It showed them that, like me, as someone who had been previously incarcerated, they too can write books, share their narratives, and use their stories to inspire hope and empower others.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a motivational speaker. I am a poet. I am a spoken word artist. I am an author. I am the founder of the movement, Grit, Grind and Glory.
Most people who have been incarcerated rarely return to advocate for the formerly incarcerated, sharing their insights, knowledge, and wisdom. The percentage of individuals who return to male institutions is rare, but many are not permitted to return to female institutions to provide motivation and empowerment. I felt the most pride when I saw how my story impacted black and brown women of my age group and younger, who came from similar backgrounds and neighborhoods. I gave them a sense of pride and empowerment, and this feeling was shared among all of us. I represented their lifestyle and where they came from. When the opportunity arose, I willingly volunteered my time, effort, and energy to share my story with the incarcerated community of women. One of the lessons I learned was the importance of being present and free. I listened to the stories of the incarcerated women and empathized with what they were going through. Some had been incarcerated for 27-30 years. I want the world to know that transformation is possible. During my own time incarcerated, I hit rock bottom and felt like giving up. But in that moment, I prayed for strength, and God answered my prayers. I credit the Most High for delivering me and giving me the vision for Grit, Grind and Glory.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were to take my best friend on a visit, I would want it to be an unforgettable experience. So, I carefully planned out our itinerary, making sure to include the most incredible people, places, and organizations that have had a significant impact on my life.
On the first day of our adventure, I would introduce my best friend to my Mother Charlette Frye. She’s been my rock, providing unwavering support and love throughout the years. Her loyalty and kindness have made her an essential figure in my life.
The following day, I would introduce my friend to Amber, my trusted life coach. Amber has been instrumental in bringing balance and clarity to my life. With her guidance, I’ve been able to navigate challenges and make important decisions with confidence.
As we continue our journey, we would head to Desert High Palm Springs. The breathtaking views, delicious food, and vibrant atmosphere make it an ideal destination. We would explore the magnificent mountains, stroll through charming shops, and immerse ourselves in the stunning scenery. I want my friend to experience the sense of awe and wonder that this place has always brought me.
Next on our list is the Pasadena Botanical Gardens. This oasis of beauty is home to a remarkable rose garden that showcases flowers from around the world. It’s like stepping into different cultures and countries without leaving California. The diverse array of flowers reflects the rich tapestry of our global community.
In addition to these incredible places, I also want my friend to discover the organizations that have played a significant role in shaping who I am today.
We would visit Give a Beat, a place that has provided me with countless opportunities to explore my talents and skills. Through them, I’ve found employment opportunities that have allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.
Lastly, we would visit Link Outside, an organization that has connected me with a spiritual community. They have not only offered me invaluable support but have also helped me send hundreds of books to those inside prisons. Their work in creating positive change and fostering personal growth is truly inspiring.
As the trip comes to an end, I hope that my best friend would leave with cherished memories and a deeper understanding of the people, places, and organizations that have shaped my life. It would be a journey filled with love, gratitude, and the joy of sharing meaningful experiences with someone dear to my heart.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
God has given me glory, but all of the glory belongs to God. I would like to express my gratitude to my mother, Charlette Frye, who has always been my number one fan and supporter. I would also like to thank my mentors for their unwavering encouragement and belief in my abilities. Lastly, I extend my thanks to Give a Beat, who gave me a heartbeat that helped provide me with a platform and opportunities to share my story and voice.
