We had the good fortune of connecting with Mychal Sorensen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mychal, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I knew I wanted to start my own business because I wanted to have full creative control over the projects I pursued. Nothing brings me more joy than diving head-first into a fun project that I was able to conceive and execute from start to finish!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For me personally, the thing I enjoy about my art is that it doesn’t look like any one type of inspiration; it’s sort of this mashup of cartoon-meets-anime-meets-pop-surrealism. It certainly was not (and often is not) an easy profession, as it doesn’t ever feel like a consistent, stable job. But I know deep in my heart that if I was to have pursued something else, I’d be artistically dissatisfied and empty inside – and that would suck. Still, some days are easier than others, and when daunting doubts start to creep into my head, I just make sure to vocalize it to the people who matter to me, and they always reassure me. Taking a nice bath and sleeping in helps too!

What I want the world to know about my brand and story, is that I’m on a mission to make art that is so visually engaging and fun that you can’t help but smile and want to be a part of. The world is constantly bombarded with heavy and negative energy, so I just want to make something pure and exciting that makes other people happy and remember that life is fun and worth living. That is what keeps me going professionally.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ooh, a week long trip huh? Alright, here’s some fun things we’d do!

Some days we’d keep more casual, and some would be more involved. For casual days, we’d hang in Little Tokyo (there’s an awesome hidden Japanese garden near an office building from the plaza that lets you go down to the garden if you ask the front desk people nicely), check out the underground mall and the QPOP Gallery, then we’d find a Granville for dinner. Or, we could go to Malibu and just chill, then get some calamari at the little restaurants on the beach.

For more involved days, we could check out LACMA, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or the Getty Villa (my favorite). Then, head to Hollywood to check out the Good Times at Davey Wayne’s bar. I don’t even DRINK but that bar is super cool and unique – that’s how much I loved it there.

I think even just doing these few activities would create some really exciting memories and involve meeting lots of different kinds of people. Lots to see and do in LA!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the unwavering support of my family and friends. I know that sounds like such a corny cop-out, but I’m so thankful for my amazing family who has always believed in anything and everything that I wanted to do with my life. They never once doubted me, and all of my friends and my partner give me the same love and encouragement – for all of them I am eternally grateful.
