We had the good fortune of connecting with Laurie Towers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laurie, what do you attribute your success to?
Hmmmmm. I’m going to say in whatever your specific genre artistically , or industry of choice, tenacity has to be the main seasoning, if not INGREDIENT in your recipe for longevity and success. Truthfully vision is an absolute necessity, but if you don’t have the breathing for long “road work”, you will find fizzling out will happen at a very quick pace.
What should our readers know about your business?
At 28 I created a franchise called Physical Advantage, that catered to the needs of the injuries of dancers and athletes. By the time I was 38 we hand landed in nearly every magazine from Vogue to Variety , both domestic and abroad I can say with both humility and pride. I was out to change the veneer of how the general public saw massage and I think I have achieved that. A general recognizable face of the industry had two expressions. It was either an indulgence of luxury or it carried negative and sexual connotations. I think my 35 years in the field , brought about a tone that for people to see that it was the most basic and potent form of physical therapy that easily gets overlooked . When I closed my business after the wrath of COVID , I realized that my time spent spinning the marketing nuances to the media, left me with copious contacts that I could use successfully for other people,in addition to my press contact list.
My husband and I always had a boutique Public Relations firm called New Masses Media, that I was able to breathe some strong life, into as I waited for New York to re establish itself during all this . I guess you can say that all this was a gift in a strange package as I like to say, because now the firm is going strong and I never looked back.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a lover of New York I would have to say ANY place here will be an experience that will long be a cozy memory. From Saluggi’s on the Lower East Side to Playwright’s Tavern in Hell’s Kitchen , we are the city that never sleeps for a good reason , and for better and for worse, I would be no where else …
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh that’s an easy one. Every woman that came before me and did the heavy lifting for us. We forget that there was a point in our lives that , as women, we couldn’t purchase a home, open a bank account or simply be a viable and visible entity without the co-signing of our husbands. I tell the younger generation of ladies that all the time. So a woman like Ida Lupino who had to fund her own films in Hollywood as most studios felt her a risk, I can easily say that her story sits on my right shoulder on a daily basis , to carefully remind me how far we have come, but also how much FURTHER we have to go.
