We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Vitelli and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
People do not readily admit they often do not know what they are doing in the act of creating until after the creation is made. The ego has a hard time accepting that many decisions we make are intuitive, not borne out of some logical means. I have a lyric in one of my songs, “I’ve got to stay on the right path, the path that follows me,” which explains this particular cause and effect relationship. A path will open up to people who are open to its possibilities.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was mulling the decision to be artistically focused throughout my college years. Throughout most of my time there, I was a double major; psychobiology and music. Around my first semester of senior year, I decided to drop psychobiology because I knew I needed to put all my efforts toward making music. Anything that stood in my way became anathema to me. Looking back, I am glad I had the foresight to make this decision. I may not be making the big bucks these days, but at least I am staying true to what my heart desires.

Throughout the ensuing years, I found success to never be a linear process one reads about on BuzzFeed. All of us who pursue a goal experience the ups and downs that are indicative of its process. What I tell myself in the darker moments is to see the forest for the trees. A light exists at the end of the tunnel and sometimes you can only can keep yourself moving toward it one breath at a time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My neighborhood, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is pretty fantastic. I’ve lived here since 2004 and still discover new things about it every time I walk around. I would spend Friday and Saturday here, since the restaurants and nightlife are fantastic. For the earlier days of the week, I’d bring them to some of the newly developed areas built around the city: Hudson Yards, The High Line, Dizzy’s Club at Columbus Circle, Little Island at Pier 55, Moynihan Train Hall, Brookfield Place, the 9/11 Memorial, and the Whitney Museum.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give a great deal of credit toward “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron and the mentor who introduced it to me, music composer Gary Posner. Mentorship is such an important aspect of our growth and it takes someone who sees beyond their own ambitions to provide it. I credit both of them with helping me to have faith in who I am in spite of the myriad challenges I face in my artistic endeavors.
