We had the good fortune of connecting with Dajah Dorn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dajah, how do you think about risk?
My ultimate life goal has always been to be free. I don’t like feeling restrained in any way and learned at an early age to be free you have to push through fears or generalizations by taking risks. Everything I’ve done in my life and career, from going to the military after high school to moving from Florida to New York to persue music and modeling, has been a risk. Something I say all the time is: “I play the long game, but I’ll take a risk at any moment.”

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Vulnerability is something I dance with a lot. I knew at 5 years old I wanted to sing and be on stage, but it required visibility and vulnerability that scared me for a long time. As I got older I thought it was too late for me because I didn’t necessarily grow up being trained how a lot of artists we know and love were. Once I stepped into my light, I knew that’s what my art had to reflect. It’s never too late and you’re always on time for your dreams. That’s what I want to inspire in anybody that hears me or sees me. I’m very proud that I’ve been taught about my artistry through life experiences and have so many stories to write and sing about. Love and relationships taught me a lot about who I am, what I want, and that I can overcome absolutely anything. I’m excited to continue sharing all my gifts with the mission in mind for everybody to share their light, because it’s in all of us. When my story is told, I want the world to know how I tackled a lot of limiting beliefs, reshaped my mind, and created a full life for myself — everything I said I was going to do, I did it. I feel so powerful right now I look forward to looking back to this moment right now lol.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well we’re definitely going shopping lol. That includes everywhere in the city, Fifth Ave, SoHo & especially all the independent brands in LES. I’m taking them on a Harlem tour to show them all my old apartments and the art across the neighborhood. My favorite food spots are anywhere with good Caribbean food like Miss Lily’s or Amarachi. Hopefully there’s a Knicks or Nets game we can go to. My goal is for a well rounded trip, so we have to hit up a museum too to catch an exhibit. Gotta round it off with a club night too with some of my promoter friends, I like taking my friends that visit somewhere like Little Sister to get a good experience of music that’s close to what we’re used to hearing in the South.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m the type to give a speech and thank 100 people lol. My siblings, close friends and team in my career support and inspire me so much. If I have to highlight specific people though I will say the matriarch lineage who’s shoulders I stand on deserve the credit for the core of who I am. Everything I am goes back to them and what they instilled in me.
