Meet Duke Yang | Screenwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Duke Yang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Duke, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Inspiration can come from many sources. I find myself constantly inspired by those around me. Take my mom, for instance. She’s by far the most inspiring person I know. Without her influence, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. There was a point in time in our lives when she single-handedly raised me, pursued college, and maintained a full time job. If that isn’t inspirational, I don’t know what is. Despite enduring hardships, my mom continues to instill in me the importance of living an adventurous, fulfilling, and imaginative life. More than anything,, I’ve come to appreciate our shared passion for food, travel, and lifelong learning. Thanks, mom!!!
I also want to acknowledge my writer’s group, a select group of screenwriters I encountered during my time at the AFI Conservatory. These individuals are not only exceptionally talented but also deeply passionate and supportive friends who continually inspire me. You know who you are.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The reality of being a screenwriter is far from glamorous; it’s a lifelong journey filled with highs and lows. Self-doubt and imposter syndrome are challenges that writers frequently face. Pursuing a career in the arts requires a certain level of resilience and perhaps a touch of madness. Transitioning from corporate America to screenwriting, I was well aware of the challenges ahead, including numerous rejections from industry professionals and screenplay fellowships, as well as the looming fear of unemployment. However, I understood that setbacks are inherent in this industry—it’s tough, demanding, and requires thick skin, a passion for storytelling, and a strong belief in yourself. While luck may play a role, it’s not the sole determinant of success.
Despite the uncertainty of where my career is going or the state of the film industry, I try to maintain a positive outlook and stay focus and ready for opportunities that may arise. One invaluable lesson I’ve learned as a writer is the importance of prioritizing my mental health. Too often, writers beat themselves up for missing deadlines, producing subpar work, or succumbing to self-doubt. This is something I’m getting better at. Nowadays, I’ve taken a gentler approach towards myself, embracing small wins and celebrating every success. And I encourage other writers and creatives to do the same.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A week in LA is plenty of time to explore what the city has to offer. Here’s my proposed itinerary: begin with a hike to the Griffith Observatory for a panoramic view of the city. Next, delve into the history of cinema at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Enjoy a full day at Universal Studios. And of course, spend the last day at the beach (Venice, Santa Monica, or Malibu). In terms of food, Dan Sung Sa is a must in K-town as well as Yerim Korean BBQ (their AYCE is great!), Leo’s Tacos Truck in Hollywood is a must, especially their al pastor tacos. I love Musso & Frank, the oldest restaurant in Hollywood. You can’t go wrong with a classic steak dinner and their famous sidecar martini. For the film enthusiasts, there’s so many iconic movie theaters to check out: TCL Chinese, The Egyptian Theatre, New Beverly Cinema, and Vidiots to name a few.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m grateful to be a part of Laos Angeles, an LA based organization that aims to amplify the Laos diaspora in mainstream media. This group has grown over the years and continues to be a supportive community filled with talented and creative members.
I also want to give a shoutout to my weekend basketball crew. It’s the highlight of my week, providing a chance to unwind and enjoy some fun on the court.
