We had the good fortune of connecting with Ciara Lyons-Ragains MSN, RN, PHN and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ciara, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business when I was 7 months postpartum with my daughter. I struggled a lot during the initial postpartum and newborn stages. I have a lot of familial support that helped carry my little family through but without them, I am not sure where we would be. The crazy part is that I am a Labor & Delivery nurse. Still, I had no idea what to expect postpartum and there is not enough information given to women and their families on how to take care of themselves and their babies. This education and support really should start in the prenatal period but it is not. I want to change this. Fast forward about 9 months and here I am trying to get the information out to families that I can help them achieve the birth and postpartum they want by providing education and coaching specific to their goals. Having evidence-informed information can also help with the birth trauma that women are experiencing, I believe.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I have been a nurse for 13 years now, started as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) and then became a Registered Nurse (RN). I also received my Master of Science in Nursing in 2021. I currently work in Labor & Delivery and recently opened my business as a nurse coach for mothers/parents in June 2023. After having my child in November 2022 and the experience I had in the initial postpartum period. I knew that I wanted to help provide evidence-informed education and support to those families whose prenatal and postpartum experiences are lacking the information they need. I struggled in the initial postpartum period. This led me to the Mama Coach. Since starting my business I have just been trying to get the word out there about my services.

Something else that allows me to stand out is that I have insight into what laboring and giving birth in the hospital looks like. Since I still work at the bedside I can provide education from that lens as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, daughter, family and friends. The Mama Coach brand. My mother raised me to be strong and to speak up for others. To do my best. For that, she deserves all her flowers. I am because of her and all the other women dear to me in my life.
