We had the good fortune of connecting with Izzy Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Izzy, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
From fabric choice, embroidery design, and natural dye color–every step of the process is collaborative. Especially in today’s fast fashion economy and the convenience of online shopping, I have found that our clients enjoy the intentional process of brainstorming together ways to memorialize and/or celebrate loved ones through embroidery.

We are also committed to preserving the art of hand embroidery and natural dye, and we take pride in using traditional techniques to create timeless and custom pieces that our clients will cherish and pass on to future generations.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional and personal journey has shifted dramatically over the last 10 years. I started my college experience as a bright-eyed “I want to save the planet” Environmental Science and Sustainability student, volunteered at Urban Farms in Detroit and worked for non-profits. Years later, I felt burnt out and jaded and didn’t feel like I was making an impact. So, what did I do? I pivoted completely and joined Corporate America.

Now and since launching Waverly Linens in 2023, I feel more connected than ever to my family roots, sustainability values, and full creative expression.

At Waverly Linens, we specialize in hand-embroidered linen tablescapes and natural dyes using local California plants, native flowers, and kitchen scraps. We weave traditional embroidery techniques and botanical dye processes together to honor Earth’s natural beauty and capture and memorialize stories of our past and generations to come.

Each Waverly Linens piece is unique and tells a story. We are excited to share more stories through embroidery and continue diving into the colors we can create through California’s natural beauty.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is going to be a really basic Saturday.

Start your morning with breakfast at Canyon Coffee and order the PB&J with sea salt. The people watching is superb.

Then head over to Wi spa in K-town. Such a unique and special experience to be surrounded by people of all ages and cultures. I love wearing the classic oversized t-shirt and shorts, eating delicious Korean food in a robe, and sweating it out in the saunas.

Once you’re feeling zen from the spa, pick up some Armenian goodies at Arbat Grocery & Deli and watch the sunset at Barnsdall Art Park. The panoramic view of the Griffith Observatory and downtown is amazing.

Then walk to Northern Thai Food Club and get the chicken khao soi and fermented sausage for the homeist of meals and unique flavors.

Digest and walk over (and stand in line) at Jumbo’s Clown Room to end the night.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Each time I go to the garment district, sit down at my sewing machine, or forge for botanical dyes, I feel closer to my mom’s journey as an artist making her own way in Tribeca and London in the 1980s. I think about my grandmother who taught me how to knit as a child. And I think about my ancestors and the role that embroidery and other art forms played to empower and create financial independence for women of all cultures around the world. Shout out to all of the women that paved the path today and to all of the incredible women in my life that continue to inspire me and all of the future generations to come.
