Meet Liz Vazquez | Artist, Filmmaker, Writer, & Marketing Manager at The Philosophical Research Society

We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Vazquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I think it’s constantly shifting and because of that it’s important to remain flexible with schedules and expectations. Especially expectations. More and more, I’ve found it easier to manage my days by starting with something that brings me genuine joy. I think prioritizing play and anything that is energizing (physically, mentally, spiritually) allows me to tackle day-to-day and somewhat arduous tasks with more ease. Balance to me means ease; not overexerting oneself to the point of burning out. Of course, I still struggle with this like everyone else. I also need to remind myself that a job is a job, and life is ultimately what we make it under the circumstances we find ourselves in. Rest and slowing down is really where it’s at in an extreme and chaotic time of accelerated output and consumption. The need to work harder, to constantly hustle, to solely survive, often makes us feel like we’re in control of our lives but I believe the reality is we don’t have as much control as we like to imagine.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I prefer to let the work speak for itself.
At the moment, I’ve been working on several mixed media art projects and a short film (my first major production since graduating from the American Film Institute Conservatory), in addition to my design and marketing work for The Philosophical Research Society. It’s been rewarding to see PRS expand its programming and grow its audience since I started working there nearly two years ago. From selecting me as a Contributing Artist in 2021 and presenting my first solo show in 2022, to providing me stable employment fresh out of grad school, to opening up a variety of opportunities like presenting a monthly radio show (Seekers’ Salon on KCHUNG), PRS has been very supportive of my personal artistic pursuits.
It’s always going to be challenging to be a creative born without certain privileges that afford uninterrupted self-expression, experimentation, and discovery. But ultimately I think humility, gratitude, and community are integral to keep going, no matter what someone is pursuing in this lifetime. It seems that having a willingness to make mistakes and to learn and grow from those mistakes not only makes a better artist, but a more compassionate human. To me, that’s the greatest accomplishment one can achieve in any field.
