We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Schnaars, Sr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, what is the most important factor behind your success?
We did not focus only on the quality of our product. We looked for problems in the use of our product that we could solve. Today we have over 35 Patents granted. This has given us a reputation of being problem solvers in our industry.

We have also focused on being an expert in a single type of packaging versus being tempted to try to be everything to everybody.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I received a BS in Mathematics in 1972. During my college days I sold Life Insurance to try to make ends meet until I graduated. I stayed in Life Insurance for 5 years then went into Industrial Sales with Signode out of Chicago for the next 5 years. One of Signode’s products was an air Dunnage bag. This is a bag designed to hold heavy loads in place during transport through the use of air pressure. This was my start into anything called a big bag.
At the end of my employment with Signode, Signode was significant to my thinking as they installed the importance of System over everything else. Steel strapping was their main product line but they taught me that no matter how much quality they put into the strapping, it was meaningless unless the tools that applied it worked well. They offered to promote me and move me to Chicago to be their national Sales Manager for their Air Dunnage Bag Products.
I declined that offer and went to work for a competitive Dunnage Bag manufacturer that allowed me to stay in Louisiana.
That employer started up a Bulk Bag Manufacturing facility just two months after I joined them. I was fired before the end of my first year and had to figure out my path forward again.
I decided at that time to stay in the Bulk Bag industry because it was a much newer product than air Dunnage. I felt that it had more upward growth available in this new industry. I was fired again from the second bulk bag company and moved to Lafayette to work with a company called Cajun Bag in Crowley which wanted to get into Bulk Bag Production.
I worked for them for three years as their only salesman and built it up to $3,000,000 a year in sales.
I departed Cajun Bag in September of 1985 and opened my own company on October 1, 1985. My start-up company was called FlexCon and Systems, Inc.
Once I had my own company, I started immediately to improve the bulk bag products with two basic patents that nearly everyone follows today.
In the mid-1990’s, we faced NAFTA. Most of my competitors immediately moved their factories to Mexico. FlexCon stayed here and figured out a way to compete from inside the USA competitively.
Then the Free Trade Agreements happened at the end of the 1990’s.
Most of the companies in Mexico then closed their plants and became brokers of bags made in Eastern Europe or southeastern Asia.
The price difference was too big for FlexCon, now named AmeriGlobe, to overcome. However, we decided on a business model that could keep production alive inside the USA. That business model survives to this day and we produce 15% of our products here in Louisiana.
Today, ameriglobe has 35 patents. Some of which are International in scope.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anytime a new customer tours AmeriGlobe, I always fit in a trip to St. John’s Oak Tree. It is an amazing site that everyone feels is breathtaking. They all thank me and take lots of pictures.

For lunch, we normally go to Don’s Seafood Hut on Johnston for Crawfish Etoufee or Blackened Red Fish.
if it is not business related, then we tour Jefferson Gardens on top of the tree and Don’s.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My two sons have been the biggest single contributors to the company’s success. They have been a part of AmeriGlobe for over 30 years each. Today, they run the company on a day-to-day basis with only minimal input from me.
But everyone plays an important role in this company every day.
