We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Shapira and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I was younger, and I got sick, I was very fortunate to have had so many people support me on my health and wellness journey. While going through it, I knew that someday I wanted to reciprocate and support those people on their own health and wellness journey. This would be my way of giving back.

What should our readers know about your business?
I graduated from Boston University in 1997 and immediately opened a private practice. I intended to “change the world” and to make everybody somewhat healthier. I quickly learned that what people were eating wasn’t as big of a problem as why they were eating. I also learned it wasn’t my job to make them healthier. It was the job of each one of my clients to make themselves healthier. Learning to step back and not take responsibility for my client’s actions definitely took a toll on me. It taught me a different type of professional skill and I had listened to my clients every step of the way, and it was then, that I changed my approach based on what their needs were. I stopped, putting my clients on diets almost immediately, and started focusing on their relationship with food. We needed to know their WHY. I created tools and actionable steps to help them adjust their habits and make a sustainable change.

Watching 25+ years of change happen in the world of health and wellness has been exciting. We have so much information available to us via the Internet. A place where everyone is always hungry for more, and I decided to dip in. Utilizing all those years of experience in this field, I wanted to be part of the movement, where I could share my method and how these six simple rules can help you build a sustainable lifestyle. Just like the changes in the industry, I’ve kept growing. Now with social media and Zoom, I have a wider reach, too. Last year was a testament to my love of my job, I wrote a book- it’s called This Is What You’re Really Hungry For.  And no, it’s not a diet book.  I break down the science to get your brain and your body on board; replacing fad diets that do not last with a sustainable method that encourages you to eat what you love; and empowers you to be the authority in your own body. I’m so proud of its growth, and I look forward to continuing to see it get into the hands of anyone and everyone who has ever struggled with their relationship with food. I also launched a master class, allowing people from all over the world to work individually/privately with themselves at their own pace and in their home. It took me so long to see myself as more than just a dietitian who sees clients privately behind a desk, and truly, I’m so grateful for what I accomplished. Embarking on a journey of personal growth is an incredible opportunity, one that is filled with promise and excitement. I’m thrilled to be a part of your journey, and I’m here to help you achieve your goals every step of the way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I don’t typically make food recommendations because everyone has their own personal journey when it comes to nutrition. However, I can suggest some ways to spend your day! First and foremost, it’s important to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night to maintain overall health and productivity. Starting your day with a cup of coffee and a simple breakfast, like Cheerios with oat milk and flax seeds, can provide the fuel your body needs to tackle the day.

Going for a walk, dancing, or listening to a guided meditation can help clear your mind and set a positive tone for the day. Spending time with loved ones can also be beneficial. I like to take family or friends on walks, sometimes incorporating a silent meditation, hike, or neighborhood stroll. Getting in at least 10,000 steps and maybe even a scavenger hunt can add some fun to your day.

During our walk, we could each spend 10-15 minutes listening to a guided meditation while getting some vitamin D and enjoying the sunshine. If we have an hour to spare, we could follow up with 20 minutes of weightlifting, stretching, and core/back exercises.

For the rest of the day, we could go sightseeing and stop for lunch at a quaint café. Spending as much time as possible outdoors, maybe even stopping for an afternoon coffee, would be ideal. Depending on our schedule, we could try to fit in a workshop on topics such as plants, healing, astrology, or yoga. Or, perhaps we could indulge in a spa treatment!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this to every client I have ever had who has allowed me to support them in their health journey and who has taught me what’s really important.
