Meet Mateo Gamero | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mateo Gamero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mateo, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Because going other way just didn’t feel right, I grew up in Perú and seeing all my family always go for the more traditional route, studying a safe career, I was about to study finance in university because I didn’t know what I wanted, but it just didn’t felt right, in 2020 when the pandemic hit, I did a lot of thinking about my future and I realized, that my dream was always there, being a photographer, I always like to take pictures and edit them, but I never got really into it, but that year a lot of that change. I started to study photography without a camera, I learned all the concepts and manual settings and then with all the money I have save up I decided to buy my first camera and just fall in love with photography, years passed and now I’m in love with film photography

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to take photographs of raw moments with raw emotions, just people being themselves on a daily basis.
It require a lot of patience, to get where I am today, but I’m not even close, where I want to be, the fear of what others think about me, has always been there, but every year that passes, that fear become less and less, just growing and understanding that I don’t need to worry about others thoughts, just myself.
I want the world to know, to pay attention to the small details of life on a daily basis, like a tree or just the grass and you will realize is beautiful

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So there is a lot of stuff to do in Los Angeles, definitely Venice beach, very interesting characters over there, then I love manhattan beach, very peaceful, and last but not least, just go to Tijuana to eat some tacos.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all there is a lot of people that has helped me in the process, I want to thank myself first for taking those decisions that didn’t look so safe at the beginning, I want to thank my parents for giving me the trust to pursue my dreams and of course all my creative friends that they are always there to support me.
