We had the good fortune of connecting with Rushikesh Bhadane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rushikesh, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from the serene town of Nashik, India, affectionately known as the country’s wine capital. Growing up in a traditional household steeped in conservative values, my early aspirations in theater, dance and music were met with skepticism. Viewed merely as ‘extra-curricular’ pursuits rather than a viable career path. Encouraged by prevailing societal norms, I reluctantly pursued a degree in engineering, conforming to the expectations of those around me. Thus, my core was shaped by an unforgiving/endearing developing country, which equipped me with invaluable problem-solving skills crucial for navigating the dynamic environment of a film set. My passion for cameras and storytelling traces back to my earliest memories of my father’s first film camera. Five year old me, eagerly dismantled the camera and exposed the Kodak film towards the setting sun, to understand the workings of the mysterious device. Even though I got in trouble for that incident, I still carry forward that curiosity for cameras, lenses and technology, minus the recklessness.
I also grew up competing as an international level long distance swimmer and a waterpolo player. My fascination for film accompanied me through the lengthy swimming sessions, where I’d spend 8-10 hours training. In that span of time, I was able to craft entire movie scenarios or playback a movie from top to bottom in my mind to pass time. Every training session subconsciously improved my ability to visualize complete narratives, eventually allowing me to envision how they should be captured simply by closing my eyes. Additionally, playing the ruthless sport, waterpolo, cultivated my teamwork skills, enabling me to rally and motivate a group of talented individuals to bring my cinematic visions to life.
Overall, my journey took a decisive turn when I broke free from all the constraints and followed my true passion for filmmaking. This transition was soothed by the discipline instilled in me by my upbringing, as well as my experiences as an athlete, mountaineer, non-profit volunteer and explorer. It cultivated in me a strong sense of perseverance and dedication, qualities that I seamlessly integrate into my pursuit of artistic expression.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a reflection of my ability to maintain a balanced mindset in the most stressful scenarios and prompt adaptability to elevates the overall quality of the product. What sets my work apart is not only the creative expression it embodies but also the journey it represents. I’m incredibly proud of my first feature film, ‘Rift/दुही,’ which I wrote, directed and produced. Even though the challenges I encountered throughout the production tested my endurance and resolve, they also provided invaluable learning opportunities. I discovered that I have the resilience to overcome any obstacle, whether it involved working with kids and animals, coordinating stunts, or navigating through unpredictable conditions.
The international recognition ‘Rift’ has received, including seven film festival awards such as Best Feature Film, Best Debut Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Music Composition, is a testament to the dedication and leadership I brought to the project.
Moving forward, I am excited to continue exploring new creative avenues and tackling even bigger projects. I look forward to sharing more stories and inspiring others through my work. Quoting the academy award winning actor, Matthew McConaughey, “I’m always looking forward to the ten year future version of me.”
My path to where I am today professionally has been anything but easy. After achieving the master’s degree in filmmaking at the New York Film Academy, I embarked on my career as a freelance filmmaker, eager to gain experience and establish myself in the industry.
In the beginning, I took on any and every job that came my way, wearing various hats on sets with different budgets, scale and complications. These experiences not only honed my skills but also gave me the confidence to take on more challenging roles. I was often promoted from assistant positions to leading positions, on account of my initiative and talent.
One notable project was an award winning LGBTQ Vietnam war feature film ‘Love in Country,’ where I started as a 2nd unit cinematographer and was promoted to lead cinematographer within a week of production. The project’s success at film festivals and subsequent distribution on streaming platforms, such as Tubi, YouTube Movies, Amazon Prime and Google Play, underscored the impact of my contributions.
However, being an immigrant in the US presented additional challenges, especially in a field outside of the STEM majors. I had to work tirelessly to earn renowned credits, accolades, and build a solid network within a year, to secure the artist visa. This category of visa permits individuals like me to work in the film industry for three years. After aquiring the visa, I felt I was finally gaining momentum with my career, but COVID-19 HIT. Majority of my friends went back home. All potential project went on perpetual hold, disrupting the industry and leaving me in uncertain circumstances. I was living off my car.
During this challenging time, the support of parents, friends and loved ones, coupled with my unwavering passion for film, kept me going. After enduring multiple setbacks, at the peak of the quarantine, I eventually secured a job at Dhar Mann Studios as a director, cinematographer, and editor. The studio is known for producing short form narrative content with the intention to entertain and educate. Through consistent hard work and dedication, within a year, I was offered a full-time position and later got promoted as the lead director cinematographer.
Today, I’m proud to contribute to the studio’s success, with our productions amassing over 100 billion views across YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. I also have had the pleasure of working with social media celebrities such as Mr. Beast, Lilly Singh, Oliver Tree, Adam Waheed, Brent Rivera and many such talented influencers. Our top performing video on YouTube, directed and shot by me with the support of a dedicated skeleton crew, was rewarded rank #6 as the most viral video on YouTube, 2021. Despite the obstacles I faced, I’m grateful for the journey that led me here, and I’m committed to pursue my passion for filmmaking with more determination and enthusiasm.
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned the significance of embracing mistakes as opportunities for growth. By accepting and learning from my missteps, I’ve been able to refine my craft and evolve as an artist.
Consistency has also been a key lesson. I’ve come to understand the importance of showing up and putting in the work regardless of physical, mental or financial hardships. This dedication has not only honed my skills but has also allowed me to maintain momentum and progress steadily toward my artistic goals.
Adaptability is another lesson that I’ve embraced. In the ever-changing landscape of visual media, being able to pivot and adjust to new circumstances is essential. I’ve learned to remain flexible and open-minded, allowing my art to evolve organically.
Moreover, my journey has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy. Recognizing the emotional depths or shortcomings and diverse perspectives of others has enriched my understanding towards the number of talented artists I get to work with on a daily basis.
My brand and story are characterized by optimism, perseverance, and a commitment to uplifting others.
A smile plants a smile.
Through my actions and my art, I aim to leave a positive impact on the world and inspire others to embrace joy, resilience, and compassion. Furthermore, I place a strong emphasis on fostering an enjoyable, passionate and supportive environment for my team. I don’t let stress consume art. Also, I never give up. Whatever it may be.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Paradise Cove Cafe, Malibu is one my favorite food/hangout/take friends and family around spots. It has a sense of nostalgia, comfort and enjoyment. I’m also a theme park person. 6 Flags, Disney California Adventure Park, Knotts Berry Farm and Universal Studios Theme Park have been a major part of my life in LA. Lastly, beaches and hikes replenish my soul. Some of my favorite spots would be Thousand Step Beach, Malibu Wine Hike, Santa Monica Pier, Point Dume, Escondido Falls and Newport Harbor.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest shoutout goes to my incredible wife/mentor/best friend/will-do-anything-to-
I would also like to thank my parents for never giving up on me. I was always an odd kid and I never kept anything simple for them. Over time, they adapted for me and keep finding ways to actively support my journey. From the early sports days till today, they inspire me, push me and reinforce my back when necessary. I will always strive to repay their love and fill their hearts with pride.
