We had the good fortune of connecting with Anisa Fowler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anisa, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
The truth is as long as you are alive, you can’t afford to give up. Every breath God allows us to breathe is on purpose. There are certainly days that giving up would be easiest. But then I remember that God is going to ask me to give an account for all the gifts He’s deposited in me. I want to be able to proudly say I did my very best and I never gave up. If the dream is still alive in your mind, don’t give up. If there are obstacles, figure out a way to turn them into stepping stones into a new level of success. You may have to take a break. You may even need walk away to regroup and re-strategize. But the only option after that is to keep going. Giving up is simply NEVER an option.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Everyone knows me as a Gospel Artist. Only my closest friends are aware of my “9-5”. I want to talk about it because I want to encourage other up and coming artists to make sure you have a job! Dreams and visions need money. Many artists refuse to work, because they are waiting for their big break. I am all for standing on faith. However, the Bible tells us that faith without works is dead! Trust God to open doors and opportunities that will blow your mind AND work so you can pay for your flights and hotel and food! When you are just starting out people may or may not cover ALL of your expenses. Imagine not being able to take advantage of an opportunity because you can’t afford a flight. Get a job.
I work for a legal company. I manage a team of 15 people and I love that everyday I get to share the love of God with them all. I’ve sung for them, prayed for them, encouraged them when they are going through tough times in their lives and just been more than a manager.
Your work is another opportunity for you to learn how to develop people skills, managerial skills, time management, understanding different personalities, ,and so much more.
Having a “9-5” doesn’t mean you don’t believe in yourself. It means you believe in yourself so much, you’re willing to split your time to finance the real dream, until God opens the door for you to walk away from that “9-5”.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love concerts, comedy clubs, and all you can eat buffets and seafood spots. Growing up in New York City you can find any of those things in minutes! We’d be all over town going to shows and eating until we’re stuffed.
There’s a spot in Pennsylvania about 2 hours outside of New York called Sight and Sound. This place brings the Bible to life and it is an experience EVERYONE should have. I would definitely make time to see a show there as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, God and His word has been my everything. When everything around me seems to be crashing down, God is steadfast and His word is reliable and a sure foundation for me to rebuild on.
I must also give a huge shout out to my mom who is a huge support in my life. She encourages me to keep trusting God. She helps me with my children when I have to go minister at various churches. And we laugh like it’s nobody’s business. My mom is not just a mom to me. She’s my friend!
Lastly, my manager, big brother, producer, songwriter, and friend, Joshua Arnoux! This man has endless belief in the gifts God has placed in my life and he has supported my journey emotionally, spiritually and financially. Without Josh, I truly don’t know how I could’ve gotten as far as I have.
