We had the good fortune of connecting with Hyereem Son and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hyereem, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Reflecting on my career journey, I’ve recognized two invaluable lessons that have significantly contributed to my success: time management and stepping out of my comfort zone.

Effective time management has proven crucial in the fast-paced Hollywood music industry. Consistently meeting deadlines and staying prepared are essential for navigating this dynamic landscape. Without efficient time management, keeping up with the industry’s demands and delivering quality work on time would be impossible.

Additionally, stepping out of my comfort zone has been transformative. I quickly realized that complacency limits growth, so I sought opportunities that challenged me. Confronting these challenges has fostered personal growth and bolstered my confidence and capabilities. Embracing discomfort has allowed me to surpass my perceived limitations and achieve greater heights in my career.

These two principles – time management and stepping out of my comfort zone – have been instrumental in shaping my career journey and professional development.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a composer and creator, I create something out of nothing nothing. Despite the challenges, seeing the final piece together makes it all worthwhile. While there are moments of frustration, the fact my creations are entirely my own serves as a significant source of motivation.

Regarding my strengths as a musician, I believe my versatility sets me apart. My music style isn’t overly distinctive, which allows it to blend seamlessly into various genres and settings. This versatility opens opportunities for diverse collaborations and allows me to explore different musical styles. Observing myself through all these processes and growing, I find satisfaction in knowing nothing better than this creative journey. I’m content, and I engage in my musical pursuits with joy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my friends visit me in Los Angeles, I want to ensure they have an amazing time. I would plan a well-rounded itinerary that captures the city’s essence, focusing mainly on Hollywood.

First, we would dive into the Hollywood scene by walking down the Hollywood Walk of Fame, checking out the stars, and maybe even spotting a celebrity. A visit to Warner Bros. Studio is a must, where we could get a behind-the-scenes look at how movies and TV shows are made. Then, we would hike up to Griffith Park for an incredible view of the Hollywood sign and the city below.

Next, we would explore Venice Beach, especially Abbot Kinney Boulevard, known for its trendy shops, cool art, and vibrant atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to soak in some local culture. Larchmont Village is another great spot, with charming cafes and shops. We could enjoy a leisurely brunch, people-watch, and check out the latest fashion and trends.

To wrap up the day, Santa Monica Pier would be ideal. Watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean from the pier is an experience like no other, a beautiful and romantic way to end a day in the city.

This mix of Hollywood glamour, trendy spots, relaxing beach vibes, and cultural highlights would ensure my friends have an unforgettable time in LA.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to express my gratitude to Professor Soyoung Kim, also known as Nubim, for inspiring me to pursue a career in film music. When I started college in Korea to study jazz composition, I wasn’t sure about my career path, but everything changed after meeting Professor Nubim. In her class, I was tasked with writing music for a painting—Henri Matisse’s “Dance.” As I worked on this project, I experienced a unique energy while translating visual art into music. This experience made me realize the powerful synergy between visual art and music, and it confirmed that film music was my true passion. I sincerely thank Professor Nubim for helping me discover my calling and providing valuable guidance that has shaped my career path.
