Meet Ilaria Serantoni | Cinematographer – Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ilaria Serantoni and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ilaria, what role has risk played in your life or career?
It’s a fundamental part of growth: if you don’t think outside the box, there’s no evolution, and this applies to every aspect of life. Obviously, we have to fight the fear of uncertainty. I left my country to work in the film industry. As difficult as it was and still is, I don’t regret it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey in art began in childhood with drawing and photography. After completing scientific studies in high school, I earned a degree in fine arts in Rome and a master’s degree in cinematography in New York, where I currently reside.
Growing up in Italy and studying classical art has profoundly influenced my artistic vision. I now work on film sets in the lighting and image composition sector, constantly drawing inspiration from the great artists of the past. To fuel my imagination and experiment with different techniques on set, I read extensively and continuously train my creative skills.
An artist’s life is filled with obstacles, such as finding inspiration, financial constraints, time management, and self-doubt. When these doubts arise, I focus on my thoughts, overcoming fear and uncertainty.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a rejuvenating escape, I highly recommend Malibu. The area is renowned for its stunning coastline, outdoor activities, and vibrant surf culture. Personally, I love the sea, the outdoors, and surfing, making Malibu a perfect spot to visit. Whether you’re exploring the scenic beaches, hiking the picturesque trails, or riding the waves, Malibu offers a refreshing break from the everyday challenges of an artist’s life.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Much of my inspiration comes from great modern and classic films and TV shows. I’m a huge fan of Asian cinema, with “Hero” being one of my favorite titles. I also admire the cinematography of Vittorio Storaro; “The Last Emperor” is outstanding. Many modern titles are wonderful, and I definitely have to give a big shoutout to classical and neoclassical art.
