We had the good fortune of connecting with Dannah King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dannah, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
When I was younger I was obsessed with Bratz dolls and dress-up games. This obsession led me to visual art and the study of self-expression in anthropology. Styling became a way I could help others not only explore their sense of self, but also help them gain confidence in themselves.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work as a personal stylist is less about my own personal goals and more about helping others gain confidence in their bodies and identities. I approach each client with the idea of understanding their needs and making their ideas a reality. What sets me apart from other stylists is the amount of personal care and attention I give to each client. I want my clients to feel comfortable and know they can come to me for whatever they need style-wise. Anthropology is highly collaborative, so it’s important for me to help express my client’s story, rather than my own. My background as an anthropologist gives me a unique point of view on incorporating different cultural aspects and references into my work. It is very important for me to not only be informed on what is on trend but also everything ranging from the production process of items to historical and cultural references. Being where I am today has taken a lot of time, as I needed to first understand myself, and my own personal style. I’m introverted, and personal styling is all about the interaction between you and the client or potential clients, so working on that has been a long but necessary process. Another difficulty is not originally coming from a fashion background, this means I have to constantly prove myself through my work and the interactions I have with others. I love working with people from diverse backgrounds and many walks of life, as it helps me gain a deeper understanding of humanity and the wider world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I moved to LA after living in Korea for three years, so 100% I would take my friends around Ktown for good Korean food! I also really enjoy Santa Monica Pier as there are so many diverse people out and about. Additionally, I love places like The Broad and Griffith Observatory, for the art and the views. I reserve a special place for Chinatown, especially for the Chinese American Museum. This is a really interesting part of the city as it holds personal and historical significance to the Chinese community. The intersection between Chinese and Hispanic cultures is one pocket of culture that exemplifies the nature of the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Josh Wallace, Dannia Tan, Kristie Lam, and Hyram for letting me dress them, and for valuing my advice. Big thanks to my family for supporting my confidence and letting me be who I want to be.
