Meet Kat Kemmet | Actor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Kemmet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat, why did you pursue a creative career?
I didn’t initially. I have always loved the arts and loved creative pursuits from a hobby standpoint but it wasn’t until I was in my mid-twenties that I ever thought about it as a possible career. I wasn’t one of those people who has always known since they were little that they wanted to be actors. When I hit my mid-twenties, I was working at a bank and I was pretty unhappy with how my life was going. I just sort of felt that I was drifting. I decided at the time that if I wanted anything to change that I needed to really figure out who I was and I started a bit of self-discovery. One of the things I did was try to work through fears that I had, which led me to the stage since I was absolutely horrified of speaking or singing in front of people. It was after my first show at a community theatre in central Florida that I really started considering what a life in the arts might mean for me. I hired an acting coach after that show, and it was through those coaching sessions that I really gave myself the permission to think of it as a career and life decision instead of just a hobby. I’ve never looked back.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
If you were to ask my mom to describe me growing up, she would tell you that I have always had a bit of a rebellious spirit and have walked to the beat of my own drum. “Wild child” may be the phrase she’d use. That tenacity and ambition is in everything I do. These days, to be an actor means to be a multi-hyphenate. Whenever I have space in my calendar and I am in between projects, I’m working on my own- short films or plays. I’m not one to shy away from a challenge, so the idea of creating my own work- even with little to no resources, has been something that’s moved the needle for me in many ways. There are always challenges in every creative pursuit, but the most difficult one for me to navigate so far has been when projects die before they really get off the ground. I’ve had to learn over time to detach myself from the end result because there have been several films that I was in and spent a lot of time on that were just never brought to completion. But I treat everything as a lesson, and that has helped. Valuing the work in itself instead of the end results changed my perspective on the whole process. It’s also what led me to start writing and directing my own projects.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh! This is a good one. Some of my go-to restaurants are in the Valley, because that’s where I’ve lived most of my time in LA. Blaqhaus on Victory blvd has one of the best burgers I have had in LA so far- so that one is a must. I’d also take her to Foreman’s Tavern in Toluca Lake to grab a wolf’s lodge cocktail and some snacks. If we wanted to do a really nice dinner- I’d opt for Castaway in Burbank. As for things to do- I like to go hiking, so we’d probably to to Switzer falls. I love Burbank, so I’d definitely take them down Magnolia for some shopping and drinks- and if it was a Sunday, check out the Burbank farmer’s market.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to everyone who has taken a chance on me along the way and the incredible friends and mentors I have had. Specific mentors I would like to shout out are Scott “Sharky” Hodges, Kate McGregor Stewart, and Lawrence Henry. As for friends and family, I specifically want to mention my mom- who is never one to shy away from giving me honest advice. I’d also like to shoutout Mikaela Duffy, who has seen me at my best and worst and is my best friend.
